Religious musicals and showtunes
Religious musicals and showtunes#0
Posted: 4/4/04 at 6:45pm
In answer to the enormous success of the god-awful movie The Passion and to commemorate this month's religious holidays, I've loaded my internet radio station with religious-themed showtunes. From the obvious (JC Superstar and Godspell) to the veiled (Tommy) and many others.
Any suggestions of your favorite holy music from the stage that I can add??

Thanks for the suggestions - they're all represented on the station now. And yes, I also think King David is fantastic (another example of Menken's talents).

I've added songs from Whistle Down the Wind, In the Beginning, Carrie, Faust, Fields of Ambrosia, the Nunsense series, Myths & Hymns, and many others. Any other suggestions?
If you missed church this week, I think tuning in to this playlist would count. It's up through April. Check it out, or don't.

Posted: 4/7/04 at 10:48amI remember Salvation was released on CD with the awesome hit song, "There Ain't No Flies on Jesus". Also try The Gospel at Colonus and "Bethlehem" from the 1996 Martin Guerre is gorgeous.

Posted: 4/9/04 at 1:55pmI think a bunch of Les Mis is subtly religious. (I wrote a paper about the book of it and how I think to Hugo, Fantine symbolizes Christ). Notable ones are "Bring Him Home" "Dog Eat Dog" (anti religious, yet sung by a villain) and the "Finale".
