You would be surprised. For the longest time, the old Woolworth's on 50 th street had the remnants of the old Earl Carroll theater concealed above its ceiling.

That's pretty cool! The Criterion in London is also below street level and opened in 1874.

Not necessarily. The ruins are more than likely remnants of Criterion's predecessors

It's more likely the remains of Hammerstein's Olympia Theatre that stood on that block and had several theatre spaces within it.
