I think it can hit number 2.
I say from Wednesday to Sunday it will finish second and gross. $28 million.

Box Office Numbers through Thursday. Rent fell to #4.
1. HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE 12.4 145.7
2. WALK THE LINE 4.6 34.8
3. YOURS, MINE & OURS 3.8 7.2
4. RENT 2.4 7.4
5. JUST FRIENDS 2.3 4.3
6. CHICKEN LITTLE 1.9 105.4
So is fact now? That's sad that it's at #4. What is Yours, Mine, & Ours again? ....I still need to see HP and want to see Walk the Line...But I think anytime I go to the movies in the upcoming week or two, I'll be buying a Rent ticket and then hopping over.
~ yours, mine & ours is a cheesy re-make of an old lucille ball/henry fonda comedy about a widower and widower with a boat load full of kids who meet and get married.
think the brady bunch with quadruple the amount of kids
~ only reason this was made was because of the unexpected success of cheaper by the dozen
what's next? a remake of with six you get eggroll?
*ugh*

Believe it or not, Cheaper by the Dozen 2 comes out on Dec. 21 - I saw the trailer for it.

Yes, who exactly was laughing at the idea of Yours, Mines & Ours beating Rent at the box office? Sadly, I never doubted for a moment it would beat Rent.

yours mine and ours definitely has a much bigger target audience in my opinion...
i would love for rent to be number two, and i think/know it deserves it, but its hard to convince all the families going to a movie this week to skip out on harry potter or yours mine and ours to go see a movie about AIDS and drugs, which is how a lot of people are going to see it. also, walk the line is going to appeal to a whole lot of the older population.
Threadjack...Marquise, what happened to le petit prince? Your av changes by the hour.
Random quotes that I pulled off of people's xangas on RENT, I've filtered out any Idina fangirls, obsessive Rentheads, or people well versed in MT. Got to love the very last quote.
"I am inspired [by RENT, the movie]...but i dont know what to do with that inspiration. It certainly doesnt inspire me to become a stripperdrug addictlesbian though. so dont worry. lol."
"I didn't want to see RENT. I really don't wanna here poor people sing about being poor, in a poor city. Sounds depressing. I'm sure I will receive at least 3 death threats and a broken hip for saying that, but we all know how cynical I am."
"hey everybody watz up nm here jus enjoying not bein at school well shannans here and in a lil while we r goin to the mall i can't wait well i don't want to see the movie we r goin to see its called rent i think its retarted shannan picked it that makes me mad"
"well last night i had a blast!!! my n my family went to go see that movie RENT!!!!!!!!!! IT WAS SO GOOD!! is was about all these gay people and all but it was a musical...and it was a good show!!! well every1 go c it!!"
"Rent was amazing. I have never had such an experience while watching a movie. Before it started, everyone in the movie theater was separate from each other, selfish and unconnected. After crying and feeling genuine love for these characters, we were all a huge lump of humanity. It was beautiful *sniffle*...I really want to see it on Broadway, however, because they changed some stuff for the movie. However, now I get the whole gist of it. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL! A true work of art."
"RENT WAS FABULOUS!! EVERYONE SHOULD SEE IT!!"
"if anybody sees this, which i completely doubt, the new movie RENT (you know the one based off the broadway musical) was one of the best I've seen in a long time. I mean, it could've used some ninja's or something... but it was still the ****."

These B.O. numbers for "Rent" are very disappointing.
Sony and Revolution aren't going to be very happy. Trust me.
~ no they're not
i think they're gonna wish they'd never picked it up and just let it become a TV mini-series. . .

~le petit prince will stay~
Updated On: 11/26/05 at 06:31 PM
Marquise --- I wonder if it'll have "legs" as they say. (That's Variety-speak meaning will it stay afloat in coming weeks or will it drop off?) It doesn't have far to go now to reach oblivion. I'm sure there are a lot of concerned execs this weekend.
I guess the future will all depend on word of mouth... and I can't predict that yet. I think the word of mouth is likely to be as split as the critics have been. Which will mean a fast fade-away in profits... and a rush to get the DVD out on shelves to pick up the slack. With an opening like this, the word-of-mouth would need to be "brush-fire strength" to turn it around. I just don't see that happening here, but...
I guess we'll just have to wait and see...
EDIT: I love Le Petit Prince. He makes me smile.
I actually think the numbers for RENT so far are about what people were predicting. The film had a larger then expected first day, but not really surprising given the fan-aspect of the movie. As others have said, its core audience is teenagers who largely don't have pick of the Thanksgiving Day movie in the household (Granny will love those trannies!). What is more important is how the film fares on Saturday/Sunday.
~ best12bars in all honesty the way things look i think this movie is not going to be the hit columbus or the studio was hoping for...
i think the big movie musical this year will be the producers
~ honestly, truth be told, they simply waited too long to make this film
~ OT: yes, he makes me smile too. i've kept a copy of the little prince on my nightstand for years.

Michael Bennet is definitely right about the Saturday/Sunday crowd making a difference. I went Wednesday and Saturday to see the film and the theatre was more full on Saturday.

I look at boxofficemojo.com every weekend to check out the numbers. It seems the norm is a movie opens to a certain number on Friday, goes up a bit on Saturday, and then drops again on Sunday. The following weekend usually sees a drop of about 50% or more depending on the movie - some could be as high as 60%. Popular movies (like Harry Potter) or kiddie movies usually see drops of less than 50%.
It's gross is just under 11.5 million right now, since it opened on Wed. That's not good and well under predictions. They poured an enormous amount into publicizing it. (So much so, they won't even begin to say, actually.) The movie cost $40 million to make with an estimated $40-50 million for their publicity.
$11.5 on an extended Thanksgiving weekend (with one day still remaining)... isn't good, no matter how optimistic you are. They were hoping for $20-25 million for the 5-day (counting Wed.).
They are far short of that. Kinda depressing.

Best 12bars that is only weds thurs and fri figures. THat does not include Saturdays numbers.
AS for budget I read similiar numbers
45 budget
25 marketing
70 million
For a musical it still is an impressive number for opening. The big question is how long it stays in theaters and how well it does overall. DOnt forget Rent does not open internationally the same time as here like other movies. Iy has a pretty long realease schedule. So it does have those numbers to add along till April for its worldwide total.

Sadly, even though I did not much love the Rent film, I expected it to do better than it has this weekend. If you look at the fact that it did 4.3 on Friday, you can assume it will add another 8-9 for Sat/Sun, giving it a total of @20 for the five days. That is, as many others have said, well below what was predicted. Sure, it's not a bad opening, but when all is said and done, if there is not positive word of mouth, it could end up grossing only 50M domestic, which would make it a disappointment (though not a disaster). I think it was everyone's hope the film would cross the magical 100M number -- from the studio on down. This no longer looks likely, although other films (Sabrina, etc) have opened weakly on Holidays and then turned around and hung in there. I doubt with all the competition RENT will do this, but there is still hope.
On my end, I've had friends who have really loved the movie and friends who have truly hated it. That doesn't make for great word of mouth. Even at my Thanksgiving, a couple people were telling everyone at the table to see it, but three others said not to, which led my two Aunts to decide not to go. For word of mouth to really work with a movie that got such mixed reviews as RENT, most people who see it have to say "What were the (negative) critics thinking?" and while a majority of people on here are, there are also just as many people whose disappointment in the film overwhelms them. A good example is the movie "Ghost". It got similarily mixed reviews as RENT (refreshing my mind, it got a 52 at metacritic), but audiences left in droves -- and across the board -- saying "I don't get it, I thought it was great, you have to see it". I don't think that's happening with Rent.
