i dont understand why people are so upset about it being in 5th place right now....people need to look at it this way:

-Harry Potter has been reaching incredible numbers because since it was a book first, it has been at easy access to everyone around the world, making everyone known about it
-Since it being a big weekend for families, what parent wants to take their younger children to go see a movie that includes drug use, people dying, and im sad to say it, but drag queens also. Thats why Yours, Mine, and Ours, and Chicken Little have been reaching great numbers also.
-and EVERYONE knows who Johnny Cash, and there a bajillion (yes i used bajillion) old people out there who loved Johnny Cash and his music, so this movie appeals to them.

I feel like we just need to wait it out a little bit and RENT will increase in sales, and increase its spot on the list...even though 5th is still a number we could be proud of.

My source for what the studio expected is printed loud and clear in the linked articles. I would love to see the film maintain or even pick up its pace via word of mouth, but when was the last time that happened with a film that opened in wide release? I've seen word of mouth help smaller films (My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Clerks, etc) but I'm hard pressed to find examples of that happening with major releases.

I think that RENT did actually very well when put up against, say, Harry Potter. Who knows, it might've done better if released on the 11th as originally planned, so it would not have to compete nearly as much.

I know quite a few people who aren't able to see it this weekend and are going next, and you can bet several thousand RENTheads are going to continue to plunk down money to see this repeatedly, so I don't think it will fade fast in the least.

I fully understand that movie making and money go hand in hand and it would be great, for future musical transfers, for RENT to not only break even but to also make money. I also would like to see new people exposed to this story and this music especially those that still think that Broadway is "Oklahoma" and "My Fair Lady", not that there is anything wrong with them but that's what a lot of today's teens, and some older folk, associate with Broadway. Movies like this can help to expose a whole new audience to musical theatre.

I've read a lot of the reviews, both professional and personal and some of them are insightful and others seem to me to be attempts at showing more about the cleverness of the writer than about what they actually thought about the movie. Having directed many shows and been reviewed many times, I've come to a point where I've been able to take constructive criticism and digest it but I've also been able to ignore the people who write just to show how clever they think they are or those who try to impress others by tearing something apart just for the sake of doing so.

Is RENT a perfect film? Of course not but what film is these days? It's a good film, IMO, and it's better that it was made than not. Larson's creation will now be seen by more people, in a shorter period of time, than it took the Broadway show ten years to reach that same amount of people.

I'm happy to know that it did not turn out to be another "A Chorus Line" or "The Wiz". I've seen the Broadway show four times and so far I've seen the movie twice and I really don't have any major complaints. I will purchase the DVD whenever it comes out and I'm sure that I'll probably see the movie again before that happens.

>>>I've heard raves about P&P, but it doesn't seem to be doing too well at the box office<<<

It's only on about 1300 screens, and its per screen average of $5-6000 is very healthy. Word of mouth will keep that sucker afloat (and has been generating buzz) due to its wide crossover appeal.

>>>I've seen word of mouth help smaller films (My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Clerks, etc) but I'm hard pressed to find examples of that happening with major releases. <<<

It is a big rarity for major releases, but there was a classic example of this last year--The Polar Express, which, coincidentally, had a fantastic re-release take this weekend. It's funny to look back at the box office articles during its opening weekend last year, proclaiming it to be a fiasco, disaster, et al. only for it to stay in the top 5 well into the new year, becoming one of the season's--and year's--biggest hits.

As for Rent, the precipitous drop over the weekend is a bit ominous. Granted, it is a holiday weekend and hence more family oriented, but that the natural drops were harsh and the recoveries not nearly as solid as other releases, it suggests that the word of mouth isn't perhaps as strong or spreading too quickly, or that in general it doesn't seem to be crossing over to a wider audience. (and I haven't heard too many screening reactions from flyover country, which sort of confirms my suspicion that this is a big city film that won't necessarily connect with middle America) The Moviefone statistic is interesting, but bear in mind Serenity was also a film that figured high in online showtime searches/ticket sales but ended up underachieving--and the reason for that is the audience for that, much like Rent, is more likely to be online and search for info than, say, families going out to see Harry Potter, Yours Mine, and Chicken Little. That audience will either look in the paper or more than likely just show up at the theatre, money in hand, not really investigate online.

As for this coming weekend, Aeon Flux is the only major release, but that's targeting the young adult crowd, and it being a female protagonist/star it also will have a stronger woman appeal than most action films--and of all the films in the top 5, it will cut into the potential moviegoers for Rent the most, I would think. Not to mention Aeon Flux will now dominate what has been one of the big marketing tools for Rent, MTV, Aeon being an in-house (Paramount/Viacom) project. Plus word of mouth seems to be a steamroller for Walk the Line, and people inclined to see something music-minded may turn their attention there... we'll see.

Twotrey --

If the numbers hold, the day-to-day drops from Friday through Sunday for Rent were percentage wise in line with -- or better than -- the similar drops of all of the films in the top 10, save Walk the Line Fri-Sat and Pride and Prejudice Fri-Sat. Just to be accurate when you're citing numbers.

Why do we care about numbers? As long as we all see it and love it, who cares what the critics and the rest of the world thinks? The numbers don't matter, just the message.

Unfortunately, the numbers matter a lot when it comes to who sees it. The higher the numbers are, the more people that are seeing the movie. We definitely also don't want the studio to lose money on RENT, because after Phantom, the future of movie musicals is already iffy.

I guess that's true. I personally don't look at numbers to decide if I want to see a movie or not. I look to see if it appeals to things I'm interested in. I also don't listen to critics (I think they are idiots. Why do you think they are called critics? They criticize.)

That just reminded me of a Foamy rant. (If you don't know, Foamy is a squirrel--hence the broomstick at the end. It's animation online.) And there's language..so if you don't like the f word you probably shouldn't read it.

(P.S. They gave it two thumbs up, if any of you didn't know. So, this doesn't exactly pertain to the movie. I don't agree with it, but it's hilarious when you see a squirrel talking about that in a funny voice. I don't like name-calling...)

I'm just surprised that "Yours, Mine, and Ours" did better than "Rent". I know it's a family movie, but I didn't think it'd be really popular. I was looking at imdb.com and it said that "Yours, Mine and Ours" was number 3 this weekend. I'm not surprised that "Harry Potter" was number 1 though because even though it got a PG-13 rating, kids of all ages see it anyway. Maybe "Rent" will move up this coming weekend. Who knows?

And with this, it's obvious the film will top out at $40 mil at best. That 54% drop is a bit ominous. Oh well.

Analysis of the weekend.

http://www.boxofficeprophets.com/column/index.cfm?columnID=9301

>Seventh place goes to Rent, and I'm still in shock as to how poorly this film has performed. After coming off a premiere weekend finish in fifth, Rent slides behind Just Friends and Pride and Prejudice this weekend, which is not a good indication of legs. Rent earned $4.6 million and dropped a larger than expected 54% - despite adding four new venues. If this was once thought of as an Oscar possibility, scratch it off your list, as after two weekends this one has earned only $23.9 million.
