Hi all,
I heard that RENT is cancelling performances the week of September 29 through Oct 5, returning on October 6. Is this to spruce up the theatre or something?

I wish they would do something to that theater, it's crap. It works for Rent, I guess, but still...

Maybe they're doing it up before the (hoped for) upturn in attendance after the movie comes out.

I read that they chose that theatre largely because it felt much more urban, and they actually "crapped" it up a bit to enhance the atmosphere and setting of the show. So it's a little of both I guess. I also heard they liked the location. That street is probably the most broken down street in the broadway district.
Tickets are on sale for that week, according to a couple online ticket sources.
It used to be the crappiest theatre in the Broadway district, but with the new stores on Broadway and NY Sports Club right next door...times have changed.
Isn't that the theatre where "Chess" played? I saw "Our country's good" there many years ago. I love that theatre.
No no. CHESS was at the Imperial (one of the nicest theatres in NYC).
Taboo, where did you hear this?
Ah. Not sure where I got my info, probably just made that up. I do love the Imperial!

Those dates are all popping up sold out on Broadway.com, and chances are, that week wouldn't randomly be all sold out.
LIES, PLEASE SAY IT CAN'T BE!
Oh the drama...
Check Ticketmaster this morning...
the thing with the theater is that they thought rent was gonna be a flop... so when they moved from off broadway they kinda just gace them the crapy theater....
I think I saw Bent with Richard Gere in this theatre.
ohh opening back on my bday..cool!

hm...when I saw Rent, it seemed pretty obvious to me that they had trashed the theatre and tried to make it look gritty and rundown to suit the show.

The theater was specifically selected and modified for the show.
They picked it because it serves as a metafor for "alphabet city" location (out of the way from mainstream) and purposely made it look run down to create the ambiance for the show. They even put up a semi-tacky "Rent Tickets Here" neon sign like you would find in a seedy flop house hotel.
