I was looking online and the release date for the new Harry Potter movie is November 18th.

Does anyone else think this might dramatically effect the popularity of RENT? Especially on the opening weekend....

i do.

No, it's different audiences. HP is still too little-kiddy to affect RENT, I think.

I actually don't see it affecting it. They have 2 different release dates and weekends....and as said before, different audience targeted.

True, they're different audiences, but only to some extent. I do know alot of older people (16,18+) who enjoy the HP books and are dieing to see the movie. But i also understand if your into the whole RENT and musical scene, then you may not be into the HP thing.

It doesn't make a difference. People who want to see Rent are going to see it regardless of what's playing next door at the multiplex.

Yes, but it'll DEFINITELY push it a spot back in box office rankings.

I know this is bad, but a part of me wants it to close in theaters fast so i can buy the DVD, fast!

I'll be seeing both. I'm wearing my Gryffindor scarf to HP and my Mark Cohen scarf to Rent. I'm all set to go. re: Rent movie opens days after new HP movie!

My mom did - I can't knit to save my life. re: Rent movie opens days after new HP movie! We actually referred to the Rent program to make sure it was as accurate as possible. I didn't realize the black fringe was so long - you learn something new everyday!

lol... Lord, I think the whole WORLD is knitting Mark scarves right now. *raises hand* It's a way to dress up and be fan-like without going overboard, I guess. re: Rent movie opens days after new HP movie!

As for the release thing... I don't think the marketing minds behind RENT would let it open on the same weekend as anything major like Harry Potter. They've done a lot to push this film, and I'm sure they know that, were it to go head-to-head with a family favorite like HP, it would lose. A weekend later seems smart to me.

Maybe I'm hallucinating, but wasn't the initial release date of Rent pushed back a weekend? I remember people talking about hating having to wait the extra time... maybe now we know WHY it was pushed back.

As far as having different audiences go - you'd be surprised how many people are looking at both. November '05 is my "movie month," and I for one will be seeing both movies!

On a side note regarding making Mark scarves...I need to start working on one! I'm curious if there is a pattern that is exactly like Mark's...otherwise, I'll look at the photo and wing it!

Haha - maybe we should start a poll on who is making a Mark scarf! I wanted a sweater too (the maroon/teal one) but my mom told me that even if she could knit one, she wouldn't re: Rent movie opens days after new HP movie!

I basically got black and off-white yarn and my mom is doing about 6-8 rows of each with a tight knit. It looks a lot like my Gryffindor scarf, just different colors. And the fringe on the ends is very long I discovered - I'd say at least 6-8 inches.

But back on topic, I'm very excited for this coming movie season. Harry Potter, Rent and The Producers. And all before Christmas. re: Rent movie opens days after new HP movie! I need to start saving money now...

I went with white and VERY dark blue yarn colors, but I'm doing pretty much the same thing. Thanks for the info on the fringe. I guess I could use this scarf at either movie, actualy! lol...

Mmm. We'd better watch it, or this is going to turn in to the Mark Cohen costuming thread. re: Rent movie opens days after new HP movie!

Rent will do mediocre box office with or without Harry Potter to compete with.

I will be seeing both, so I know I won't be effecting it. :P

I sort of think that it's better to do it after -- if it was done before, then Rent would have the press it's hoping for for a few days, but Harry would come in a steal it all away. If they opened at the same time, Harry would completely overshadow Rent. Hopefully this way some of the HP press can die down a bit before Rent comes into the picture.

Harry Potter appeals to more than kids and teens. People in their 30's and 40's will rush to see this movie. There were more adults in the theatre when I saw the 2nd and 3rd movies.

Well, remember the original CHICAGO ran nearly 1000 performances -- an outstanding run even now and absolutely incredible for the time. Just because it didn't run for 20 years or something doesn't mean it wasn't a huge success.

Hey Im 24 and I am pyshced to see both movies, so age groups should be too much trouble. Rent will never open number one of course but it should do well. Does anyone know what its budget was so we can see how much it needs to recoup any loss and become a success?

I dunno, I think the fact that they cancelled the platform release of Rent and managed to secure a PG-13 rating means they're really hoping to open at Number 1.
