It's funny how much easier it is to recognize the problems in a work right off the bat *when we're not the people producing it*. I'm sure Rapp must be reading this and thinking, "I can't believe they have a problem with this, that, etc."
To turn the discussion back to Rosario: I will say that while I'm really enjoying her, her gasping is intrusive. Hopefully they'll be able to eliminate this by November 23rd.

I really need to stop reading this thread. Reading all the comments about the soundtrack, but not having it myself is driving me crazy, but I can't help myself. :-P

did they totally change the key of "out tonight"?
"Out tonight" sounds like its in the same key as the OBC.

Way to nitpick.
I enjoy this CD - A LOT.
BG - I know you like Idina, and you know I love me some Idina...she just isn't as amazing on this as I know she can be. I am sure she's going to be a major hit in the movie, but I'm not (we're not) reviewing the movie - we're reviewing the CD.
I think her part in TMoLM is great - and I enjoy what she does in it more than on the OBC...but if her OTM is just for the CD - well, she sounds borderline high/bored.
The song itself is hard to listen to - but she does it very slow. I am sure she'll blow the **** out of it in the movie. But as I said, this is the CD.
That said, Rosario's OUT TONIGHT is great. It's nice and clean - though the music is like an ocean and her voice is the little fish that can't. But that seems to be a running theme on the CD.
And Tracie rules all.
As if Maureen Johnson WOULDN'T smoke pot before her performance art piece....please!

Good point.
Not that being high is a bad thing...for Maureen...that is.
Bored? She sounds bored? She sounds just about anything but bored to me...
I can do my share of nitpicking on this, but bored is one thing I'm definitely not hearing.
I don't want to comment too much having not heard it all, and possibly running the risk of (hopefully not) eating my words. BUT, I think that what might be catching people on Adam's voice is that now, he sounds nothing like he did on the OBC. Not on the soundtrack, not on the Aida CD, not on Hair, not on his solo records, and sure as hell not live. I'd venture that some of this is character appropriate stuff and -- gasp! -- acting, but I think it's also that the way we're used to hearing him sing Rent isn't the way he sings anymore. I remember picking up the Rent CD and listening to it for the first time after I'd heard him live in Aida and on the Aida CD -- and he sounded kind of different. I'm not saying one is better or worse, but I think the soundtrack clips, at least, sound more like the Adam that I'm used to hearing -- and I'm not going to complain over that. I don't think he sounds "old" or "sick" on any of the newer stuff -- he's matured, but not badly.

Adam...acting?
You're treading on thin ice there, em.
Just kidding.
Adam sounds good, I guess - from what I can hear when he's not being engulfed.
He sounds great on LOVE HEALS.

Just finished listening to the soundtrack.
I really enjoy it overall. I loved Anthony and Rosario in some spots. I was really bothered by "Without You"....kind of boring and lacking emotion. I am hoping it will be a bit more full when I see the acting attached in the film.

I'm not going to lie. Glory is one of my favorite songs, but I'm not so impressed with it on the soundtrack.

warning: opinions herein. please do not read if you don't want to know.
i have to say i am alternately incredibly underwhelmed and amazingly fascinated
by the soundtrack. parts of it sound like the cast members singing to
bad karaoke tracks while other tracks sound rocking like the original cast recording should have but didn't. so, i don't know what to really think, beyond tracie thoms sounding better than i expected and rosario sounding about as i expected (but still not really that bad at all) -- oh, and why did they slow down la vie boheme, so an audience could understand the lyrics more? i think anthony and wilson are in great voice, and although rosario sounds pro-tooled in a lot of places and lacks the depth and reediness of daphne, she sounds like she's giving a great performance nonetheless. i am most disappointed in how tinny a lot of it is; what's with the casio keyboard (i mean orchestra) and bad drum tracks in tango maureen and today 4 u (among others)? i was bored so i did a comparison between the title song (soundtrack) and the title song (cast recording) and was shocked to find i favored the cast recording -- which i really didn't think at the time held a candle (sorry for the pun) to the show live. still, i'm looking forward to the movie with mixed emotions; some dread, some excitement. glad for the cast's opportunity, but post-listen increasingly worried for the columbus factor.
I'm still trying to take it all in.
Some of the arrangements on these songs are improvements over what was originally done on the 1996 stage recording.
Songs on this soundtrack version rock *harder* than their stage counterparts.
Stand outs:
RENT - Miss the "Benny" and "Joanne" sections of this song but overall it really doesn't affect the song. Anthony and Adam do the song justice. The drums on this track are *kick-ass*.
ONE SONG GLORY - I love how Adam subtly starts this song. He sounds like a broken man trying to re-gain himself and through every line he slowly gains more force and power. I personally loved this song.
TANGO: MAUREEN - Incredible. Miles ahead of the stage version! Anthony and Tracie are just amazing! From beginning to finish a real winner! Tracie Thoms and Anthony Rapp outdid themeselves!! The latin influence is *right on* in this track. It sounds like a real tango now!
OUT TONIGHT - The musical arrangements on this track had my hair standing on end. I'm loving that guitar riff right when Rosario sings: "Don't forsake me. . ." Another *kick-ass* song. Rosario sounds like she is having fun with the song. I like some of her vocal choices. For example, the way she purrs "Meow"...the sexy way she says: "Don't forsake me..." but overall the music and the arrangement are overwhelming her voice. She should be *on top* of it. It sounds like she's deep in the mix. Not what I expected and I'll be honest a little disappointed.
WILL I? - This one was great. You can hear very clearly which character is singing what part on this track. Rosario's voice sounds very pretty on this track.
LA VIE BOHEME - Now this one sounds so late '80s/early '90s grunge!! So much better than the Broadway version. The feel of the song, the guitar riffs, drum rolls...everything about this track was *on the money*!!!
SANTA FE - I love Jesse's vocal choices and fresh interpretation of the song. Another song that in my book is light years ahead of the Broadway recording.
WHAT YOU OWN - Anthony Rapp! Anthony outdid himself on this song and virtually this whole CD. He sounds so much better here than on the OBC.
LIGHT MY CANDLE - This was cute. I do like Adam's delivery more on the OBC though. Rosario is cute here and I like the very subtle latin influence of the arrangement.
GOODBYE LOVE - Anthony, Adam, Taye, Tracie, Idina are all good on this. Rosario on the other hand is missing the urgency and desperation and anger her character should be giving at this point in the story. Am I being unfair if I said that I really missed Daphne when I heard this song?
WITHOUT YOU - I love, love, love the musical arrangement of this song! It's so much better than the stage arrangement except for two things: Adam sings it so much better on the OBC and although Rosario does a decent enough job I still prefer Daphne Rubin-Vega singing this.
ANOTHER DAY - Adam and Rosario are fine here. Not a bad track at all. On par with it's stage counterpart.
TAKE ME OR LEAVE ME - Tracie Thoms! Tracie Thoms! Tracie Thoms! The woman is unbelievably gifted. She's toe-to-toe with Idina on this one and more than holds her own. They both ripp into this song and make it one of the soundtrack's highlights.
OVER THE MOON - Idina's performance of this song is so much better on the OBC. She wasn't bad, I just felt her stage version had more passion. She was fierce on the OBC.
FINALE B - Amazing! Amazing finish the harmonies here are light years ahead of the original recording. This one moved me.
All in all it wasn't bad. Overall it improves and enhances the score from the original ones recorded in 1996.
The standout performers on this CD to me were Anthony Rapp, Tracie Thoms and Jesse L. Martin.

i almost forgot:
TODAY FOR YOU - This version blows the OBC version away!!It's a slammin' track and Wilson does it justice!!
wouldn't we all be complaining if it sounded like the OBC because then it's pretty much just a copy and no additional thought went into it??
People'd be complaining no matter what.
I think that we're all just so USED to the original recording, and that rather than this new one being bad, it's just going to take some time to get used to. You know, when you see a show that you know so well that you can hear the CD in your head while the actors are performing? Like that.
I'm sure I'll have my minor things to nitpick come Tuesday, but overall, I'm going into this open. And I've been listening to the cast recording a LOT lately.

To the people who think this thread shouldn't exist because it's borderline illegal, unfair or WHATEVER:
Everybody knows that the first place information about the entertainment industry leaks to is the internet.
It's WHOLLY EXPECTED; articles in major newspapers such as the New York Times constantly cite online message boards (SUCH AS THIS ONE) as sources for leaked information (or music).
Now, I know that this CD has been released to reviewers and such, but even if it hadn't . . . guys. It's our job as members of this board to gossip about stuff that hasn't come out yet.
That said, it's so comical that the people on this board are the tight-asses who worry that we're being bad. You'd think the theatre kids would be the first ones to shake things up! Even though RENT is already being released - under-the-table recordings are the lifeblood of the theatre community! Go out there and be the first people to hear the RENT soundtrack! And then talk about it on BROADWAYWORLD.com! One for all and all for one! Excelsior!
Done.

Indeed, studios rely on internet buzz a lot nowadays.

So, Case in Point:
The CD rocks, Tracie is the greatest thing ever since the wheel, and Rosario is gonna kick ass!
Tracie *is* the greatest thing ever since the wheel!
Rosario is "alright" but she'll never hold a candle to Daphne, she was a tough act to follow anyway.
I liked Anthony's vocals more here than on the OBC.
I can't same the same for Adam's. He was "underwhelming" to say the least. Same goes for Idina.
Needless to say Jesse, Wilson andTaye were all on top of their game.

I agree. Obviously some of the cast members have much more to do on the album than others so it's hard to judge, but all things being equal, based on their performances I would say :
Tracie is the best thing on the recording. and gotta say followed by Taye. I know he has the smallest amount but I enjoy it all. Jesse is pretty high up there as well.

Hey,
Sorry--I've got a bad ear for lyrics, and I can't get all the lyrics of "Love Heals" right. I searched on google but I can't find them up yet (one Live Journal, I found, had some of the lyrics...)
Does anyone know of anywhere I could find them?
Thanks,
Alex
If you own the CD, they're in the booklet...
