"Anyway, Out Tonight and OSG, Rosario and Adam get eaten by the music. Shame - since they both rock."
Exactly.
Like hell?
Sh!t.
This is going to be a long week of waiting.

I think he sounds good - especially on OSG.
But he's probably the weakest of the males.
Acting-wise, I could see that being valid. But vocally? That scares me.

Heh, I think he sounds fine.
I think he is swallowed up like everyone else.
It's horrible during Goodbye Love....When Joanne and Mimi are yelling to each other about Maureen/Benny....the music eats them whole!
I have a lot to say about the soundtrack, but I can't do it righ now. I will maintain however, until I am proven otherwise, when the film comes out, that OTM is probably not the same version as the film. I really have no proof of why I believe it to be true, I just do. Maybe because I assumed that from the trailers it looks like there will be noise during the performance (besides the mooing), like cheering and stuff. Maybe they just edited that out of the recording, I don't know. I also think that that song, even on the OBC, is so hard to listen to out of context. And regardless of whether that is the version or not am looking forward to it being a very unique scene in the film.
Adam's voice on the soundtrack is what raises the issue of age again. He can pass for late twenties in the face and even sounds youthful in the video blogs, but on this soundtrack - perhaps in his effort to affect the voice of a dying/just-out-rehab man - he sounds goatish. Too old. A shadow of his former self. What's really interesting is that Rosario sounds about 19 or 20 much of the time (this is why the thin voice works), so there's a sort of Lolita effect to the whole thing.
I wouldn't say that Adam is the "weakest" of the males because the other three are very strong - though Jesse sometimes says his lines in this creepy, schmuck voice that's better suited to the Man than Collins. I would say that the other three guys are overall great whereas Adam is great sometimes and mediocre other times.

Oh, saying Adam's the weakest isn't saying he's bad.
Jesse is by and large the best on the CD.
Wilson is great in his small role on the CD...of course. I don't think he's changed in all this time.
Anthony also sounds great - but I don't think his part allows him to display the power Jesse can.
As far as the girls, Tracie is the best without a question. Idina has her moments, but is rarely on the CD. Roasario just blows me away. I suppose the normal reaction is "how surprising!" But I trusted that everyone cast would be great...so I will say this:
I am very happy that this is the cast that will be immortalized on video.
P.S. Tracie better get her ASS on Broadway originating a lead role!
I actually like Rosario on it. She's not as raspy and tough as I would like her, but I think it will be okay.
I do not like Idina Menzel on it at all. She sounds like she's trying too hard.
Damn. You all are really letting them have it. I almost felt GUILTY about what I wrote just because I know they're all reading this. (Another funny observation: On TRL yesterday afternoon and Jimmy Kimmel about half an hour ago, the guests both suggested that they had been reading Internet message boards and taking negative opinions about their work to heart.)

Heh, I don't think I have a negative view of a person - just the quality of the recording.
And OTM has to be different...I will say, when I first heard it, the way she said "Bulldog" killed me - I was laughing - hard!
I love Rosario's "Without You."
Jesse, I think, has always been my favorite guy.
Tracie is just - there are no words. She IS the Rent Soundtrack.
I like how Mark (Do I say Mark or Anthony?) tries to calm everyone during GOODBYE LOVE.
Also like that they put the extra dialogue in Tango Maureen (not to mention the extra music - AGAIN of course).

When will people get it through their thick heads that this is a soundtrack for a friggin' MOVIE!
It is not a crystal clear, pitch perfect, over enunciated, lifeless cast recording.
You just can't judge it until you see it with the performances.
I swear the amount of flip-flopping that some Rentheads are doing is almost comical.
gah, Adammmmm. The prospect that he might be "mediocre" and ANY point scares me.
"I swear the amount of flip-flopping that some Rentheads are doing is almost comical."
LOL you know what's more comical? You using 2004 Presidential election discourse to rant about something as trivial as the soundtrack for RENT.
Am I one of the few who has no problem whatsoever with Adam's voice on the soundtrack? I don't know if anyone's been paying attention, but that's how he sings now. His voice has 'evolved' to a more ROCKish style since his 1996 RENT debut. He's always wanted to be a rocker; that's why he sings like this, now. If you knew Adam's solo work, you'd know that this is how he sounds.
Personally, I think he sounds BETTER. His voice still has power.
Now, if you look at OTHER modern rock bands in recent history... how many out of those can really sing, hm?
I believe his voice suits the character. Roger is supposed to be a rocker-man; why shouldn't he have a rocker voice?
I don't know about everyone else, but the argument I'm making is that Adam DOESN'T have a "rocker" voice on much of the soundtrack. He has an "old and sick" voice on it.
I have only heard pieces of it, but like what I have heard. Mind you, it may take a bit of getting used to.
I find that I keep wanting to add back in the snippets that are not there - I did not realize that when they were removing the voicemail/messages, it included those in the body of the songs.
But, I like what I hear so far. I just know the OBCR so well, that it will take some getting used to something a bit different. I think once I see the movie, the differences will make sense.
I will wait for full comment until the copy I ordered arrives. But, what I have heard, I have liked.

Have we ever stopped to think that for some of the character songs well actually all of them- except for SOL, they all were directed to sing a certain way to evoke character. so like many of the others are saying you can't judge until you see the performance in the movie. Movie Soundtracks are VERY different from Broadway Soundtracks. BS's are made to sound the best it can sound not as though you are actually performing it on stage. Movie soundtracks can't have that quality because that is what is used while the characters are playing their characters. If it sounded as though they were just "singing" to sound great it wouldn't make sense with what is going on in the film. I personally think Adam sounds awesome because you can hear that he is singing from the character's point of view and not just because he has this great voice. All of them for that matter. The same goes for Idina's vocals.
"Movie soundtracks can't have that quality because that is what is used while the characters are playing their characters."
You forget the object of releasing a soundtrack (especially two months early) is to get people accustomed to enjoying it independent of the film. A commercially released soundtrack needn't have all the quirks that the film version will; fyi, there are BIG differences between the music we hear in Chicago the film and the music we hear on the soundtrack, especially in We Both Reached for the Gun. That's the way it should be. Leave all of the strange quirks to the film and give us a soundtrack that we can jam to while driving down the street. Quivering voices and heavy breathing won't cut it.
Old and sick?
I'm sorry, I don't agree. I think he sounds rocked-out--like Roger is supposed to be. A struggling rocker. An aspiring rock star.
Do you listen to modern rock, classic rock, or alternative music often?
"Do you listen to modern rock, classic rock, or alternative music often?"
Yes.
Okiedokie. I'm just wondering.
I feel he fits that sort of sound--something that also appeals to the mainstream. That, and I just think he sounds perfectly fine. All of the men are amazing on this soundtrack.
Now, Idina... I really... have to admit I'm not enjoying what I'm hearing of her. I'm a little disappointed and hoping that the audio will work well with the video. I'll hold my final thoughts until the movie's release.

To think of it - the POTO Soundtrack quality is horrible (sound wise, not actor wise...this time)...but it all sounds fine in the movie.
I still wish they would have turned up the vocals.
In any case - I love it!
I can't wait for the movie.
I think it's more than a little unfair to judge "Over the Moon" before seeing it...it's not really a song so much as a performance piece. Most of it is speaking. It goes along with what you see. Personally, I think the direction she took it in is GREAT, I'm just not fond of how weak the "The only way out is up" and "A Leap of faith" lines are because the intensity of them is what always transitioned the piece to the next part. It, to me, takes something away from it. The timing with the "moo-ing" at the end was better on the OBC, I think, but as far as where she's taking it overall, it's the best "Over the Moon" I think I've heard.
Adam does sound weak at some points, but great at others. I think my biggest pet-peeve moment is during OSG when he sings "And then no need to endure anymore." He sounded so passionate on the OBCR, and on this, there's nothing there.
Jesse's voice sounds great, but his riffing was a little too much at the beginning of "I'll Cover You (Reprise)"...it took away from that moment a little bit.
Ya'll are really bootleggin' it up!
Can't wait 5 more days?
