I managed to track down the entire Rent movie soudntrack. Let me just say that it is very different, but amazing. I actually, in most ways, like it better than the OBCR. Just thought I'd register and elt you know you wouldn't be disappointed. :)
There's a reason that the last thread on this got deleted.

Advance copies have been mailed to press, reviewers, and any variety of people. It's unfair to assume that anyone commenting on the soundtrack early is basing their thoughts on illegal copies.
I too have heard the entire soundtrack, and think it sounds overall, quite good.
Right, of course -- but it's not out there for public consumption yet. And inevitably, there will be posts from people who downloaded it from wherever.
It amuses me that whoever first put it online would even be so stupid as to post on some public forum where they've put it. *shrug*
But Structure, since you registered, join in the fun and don't leave soon. New members are always WELCOME !
Well, how bout we say: Feel free to comment on the Rent Soundtrack Here. Don't tell us how you've heard it.
I think an awful lot of the mixing makes it sound like the Disney Channel tries to do rock.
The performances, for the most part, sound very good though.
See, now therein lies the correct disclaimer.
I feel like the only person on the planet who didn't give into the pressure. *waits*
BroadwayGirl, have you heard the entire soundtrack or are you just talking about the website clips?
There are legal implications in discussing it. Similarly to why it isn't allowed to discuss bootlegs on this forum. By not addressing it, the site gives the impression that they are condoning it.
It likely isn't a case that would be won, but for a big music company to take on a site that I understand is primarily funded by the ad revenue and out of the pocket of the creators it wouldn't take much.
It's erroring on the side of caution.
Mine was a reviewers CD, which was a "Watermark CD" which is copy protected, it won't play in a computer just in a standard audio CD player. Which is a little annoying, because you can't put it in your i-pod, but it keeps people from ripping the tracks to their computer.
Emcee, you are not alone. Except from the official site's clips, I am patiently waiting for my copy to ship from Amazon !
Seriously, can't people just put off the discussions for another week until it's publically released? That way, people are waiting until the release date can start a thread then and not have people snotting "This has already been discussed!" Not everyone has the ability for advance copies or other methods of hearing the soundtrack, so just let it be until then.

Is that the copy-protection that can easily be overidden by running a black marker on the rim of the CD? Or do they have a new one? Ripping songs to a computer, as of this writing, is perfectly legal. It's the SHARING of those files that is illegal.
Now Watermarked CD's are harder to crack then they were a few years ago when you could just use a marker and color in the protected area. Now they make them where it is all blended together, so you can't see there the mark is. Also, starting this months record labels are starting to use a CD designed by Sunn which will not let you rip mp3, wavs, wma, oggs or any form of audio files from them. Plus a lot of CD's today when you put them into your computer on encoded, so they lock on to your computers address, so when people put mp3s on download sites the record labels can track the original source.
The record company just takes out the possibilty that 1/10 people that rips it will share it, so they take out that option for everyone in defense.

They had two promos for the soundtrack at the Strand downtown on Fulton...And no, I didn't get one : ( Another girl had them in her hand, she did let me look at it though. If I had only gotten there sooner!
Add me to the list of people paticently waiting for the actual release.
It's about a week away I don't see the need to rush and do illegal things. I'm content with the clips on the site for now. And hopefully Idina will be over all good in "Over the Moon", unlike what the clip sounds like. Eek.
Idina Menzel's recording of OVER THE MOON on the cd supposedly isn't what will be heard in the actual film. It was filmed live.

Idina's rendition of Over the Moon is excellent on the soundtrack. They didn't choose a "bad" clip for the website - just one that doesn't stand up on its own.

OTM is the worst track, IMO.
No, it isn't bad. It's slow. And even more out of place than it is on the OBC.
I like Idina's voice on the clip, but she is actually singing live on the film which I think is great because it increases the sense of reality of the moment.
I'd post my detailed review from another forum, but it seems like this thread is more about discussing the legality of soundtrack discussion rather than reviews...
In sum: The best things about that soundtrack are Rapp (upstages Pascal at every other opportunity short of when they're singing together - chemistry is still there), Heredia (obviously born to play this role) and Dawson (not a kickass singer, but a pleasant and someone who really knows how to communicate the meaning behind lyrics).
