"I'm more than likely in the minority here, but the "Republican puppet" line was totally unneccessary."
It was a cheap shot. How unoriginal to repeat a six year old joke. A boring joke for a boring night.
and it only got the biggest laugh of the evening...yeah I would have cut it too.

"It wasn't the producers that wrote that line - It was an ad lib. She didn't do it in the rehearsal this morning."
That doesn't mean that it wasn't planned. Like Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" it just wasn't rehearsed.

Could someone give me the quote please? And while I'm here, would you have rather heard a joke about the republican puppet or Brokeback Mountain for the 1,000 time? I, personally, LOVED the joke!

"I, personally, LOVED the joke!"
If you loved it so much, then why don't you remember it?
I agree. It might not have been written, but it was definitely planned. It was just a cheap shot for an easy laugh. That whole routine is seriously getting tired. She should have put more thought into her wardrobe than that joke.

The joke was that John's puppet introduced himself as a "puppet and a republican." Christine said something like "A Republican puppet. That sounds familiar."
It got a huge laugh from the audience. Frankly, the major awards shows always have political jokes that skew to the left. (By contrast, the CMAs go the opposite direction.) There's nothing wrong in playing slightly to the audience. Besides, if the presenters or hosts didn't crack a few leftist jokes, what would the right-wing radio talk show hosts have to bitch about the following day?
I agree! I thought Christine & John were great!!! The place cracked up when she mentioned the "republican puppets"!! LOL! Loved it!!
that was one darn handsy puppet. i thought sure he was going to cause a wardrobe malfunction.
I'm a right-leaning person and I felt the joke was worthy of a snicker or two, but not the raucous laughter it recieved. It's seems they weren't really laughing at the joke, but the fact that it was a crack on the right. "Oh, she just cleverly insulted the president. That was kind of funny, but I must laugh harder lest my leftist buddies think I'm beginning to defect to the right!"
Please.
Exactly. You hit it on the nose.
It figures some people would be whining about the "Republican Puppet" commment. It was just a joke.
And the "Sweeney Todd" revival is not garbage
Hear hear! Of course, as Michael says, it's something too intelligent to have ever started on Broadway, so naturally there are going to be some people who are really going to have trouble interpreting it.

AMEN. And I think freeadmission hit the nail on the head with the way the joke was received. Even though I'm a left-leaning person and I hate the president, I still think the joke wasn't even funny. It was completely predictable, not at all clever, and just very childish, cheap, trite humor...just like nearly every appearance Rod and Tartaglia make. And the show they come from.
Thank you, BroadwayGirl. It's nice to know I'm not the only musical lover who doesn't like Avenue Q.

It was one toothless line from an entertainer. Calm down, hysteriums.
It was a pretty stale line but Christine delivered it well. What was notable was the audiences sustained applause.

I'm glad other people here felt the same way about the joke (that it was lame and a cheap shot)! Besides, it seemed really outdated. Calling Bush a puppet is SO two years ago.

The joke worked because like all great zingers, it was unexpected.
There was a set-up and a payoff.
And then it was left behind, again like all good zingers.
If you are an actor, you can at least appreciate the total professionalism with which it was done.
While I wouldn't label this production of Sweeney Todd as garbage (although I have friends who do), it is my least favorite production of the piece and I have seen six. It is my least favorite as it took the blood, fear and emotion out and tried to make it an intellectual piece.
Sweeney must horrify the audience and shock them. This production does not. It must also present the title role as a sympathetic (albeit insane) character and this does not.

Well, TECHNICALLY. There is more blood in this Sweeney than any other production. Considering there are buckets of blood, the stage goes red when someone is killed, and each victim gets a blood stained lab coat.

You call THAT unexpected From the moment Tartaglia and Rod came on stage, I was waiting for some bad Republican and gay jokes like they always have, and the second Rod said his "I'm a Republican puppet" line, it couldn't BE more predictable.
