Bernadette Peters is presenting the Tony Award for Best Musical again??? Didn't she just do this a couple of years ago?

No, but she also did present Memphis Best Musical back in 2010.

"Angels in America” is an event, but “Three Tall Women” is a better, if not a landmark, play."
Is Reidel really saying "Three Tall Women" is a better play than "Angels"? In what world is that true? Putting aside how much I didn't enjoy the first act of the TTW revival, I'm pretty sure the entire theatrical world body has deemed by general acclimation that "Angels in America" is the greatest play written in the last 25 years, period. Anyone can prefer this production of TTW over this production of AIA, sure, but the better play seems to have been settled long ago.

"it’s only 90 minutes, which in a season of long sits is a relief." This is NOT a valid reason to put "Three Tall Women" over "Angels."

I think Three Tall Women and Angels in America are like apples and oranges. They both are great, but they're both amazing in different ways, but I think, Angles as spectacle AND performance. The show could be done with bare bones and still be amazing, but the production is just jaw dropping.

He was on NY1's On Stage roundtable tonight, talking about Tony predictions along with Roma Torre, Peggy Siegal, and Jeff Blumenkrantz.
The actual dialogue (after host Frank DiLella brought up Revival of a Play):
Siegal: It's Angels in America, hands down. The best revival... ever.
Riedel: I have to tip my hand, though, to Three Tall Women, which I think has been given a beautiful production by Joe Mantello, and an extraordinary performance by Glenda Jackson, who's certainly going to win the Tony for Best Actress in a Play. If I were voting, I'd vote for Three Tall Women. I have a little Angels in America fatigue. I'm tired of hearing, "the great work... the masterpiece...the most important play of all time"
And the other three totally cut him off, speaking over each other because they couldn't disagree fast enough.
Torre, interjecting: But it is.
DiLella: Sacrilege, Michael, sacrilege!
Riedel: You can leave out that second part Perestroika, I'm not sitting through that again.
DiLella: Jeff, help me out here!
Blumenkrantz: No, I mean, it's one of the greatest plays ever written, and I could see it every week.
Torre: I agree with you folks. Sorry, Michael, I don't agree with you. And any other year Three Tall Women would win, and would certainly deserve to win. But in this particular field, I don't see how Angels in America can't take it.
Riedel: I'd like to see Glenda Jackson and Nathan Lane swap roles. Glenda could play Roy Cohn, and Nathan could play the nasty old lady!
So there you go... he's just tired of it, I guess.

I never thought I'd want to sit through 8 hours of theater again, but with this Angels, I do. I saw the Signature revival a few years back and hated it. I thought it was messy and not well done. This is perfection. But so is Three Tall Women. Happy to see them both doing so well.

Michael Riedel doesn't like Angels in America. He never has. It bores him. He thinks there are good parts and then long stretches of blah blah blah "Antarctica" blah blah "Oldest living Bolshevik..." blah blah "Ozone, racism, Zionist, McCarthy..." - his brain has left the building. Liberal politics, national guilt and Jewish/Mormon spirituality are not topics that keep him up at night. Whatever - its not his thing. Of course, the thing that really bugs him is that everyone else in his world thinks that it is the great American play of our time. (Me included.) He thinks we are all brainwashed.

In fairness to the man and as much as I loved the whole experience of the play, it is a rambling, sprawling mess of a play. A story synopsis for the play would be about 5 short lines long. It is a highly indulgent piece.
The first acts of both parts could go and frankly the 'straight couple' characters could very easily go and the play would lose none of it's impact. They are boring, frustrating and are both so manipulative and full of self loathing it is chore to watch. They deserve each others misery and I didn't feel anything for either of them.
Every time they came on stage I was like URGH! Neither character really adds anything (apart from adding a female heterosexual character into the mix) to the play. They are just tiresome and everything their characters go through is the same as what the gay couple go through.
There you go, a brilliant tight 3/4 hour play instead of a 7 hour slog x
