June 20, 2007 -- THE critics slammed him and the Tonys snubbed him, but give Kevin Spacey his due: He's still a Broadway star.
"A Moon for the Misbegotten" ended its run June 10 well into the black, defying certain normally infallible pundits who thought Spacey was, to use an expression from his adoptive England, "past his sell-by date."
Investors in the $2 million production should see a 30 percent return, making "Moon" one of the few shows this season to turn a profit.
By contrast, "Spring Awakening," adored by the critics and winner of eight Tony awards, has recouped only about 35 percent of its $5.5 million investment - though since the Tonys, the box office has picked up nicely.
"You raked us over the coals and you were dead f - - - ing wrong," Ben Sprecher, the producer of "Moon," reminded me yesterday.
