If she played Nellie it would also make sense why she didn't continue with the show..

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

I believe she played Nellie when I guess they were toying around with keeping that character. The character was written by Hal Prince’s (RIP) request.

Who remembers when the show was still called BOUNCE until only a couple of months before previews of the Public production? Sondheim announced the title change to playbill.com and clarified that the Bounce melody mostly remained in the new opening number (Waste).

I didn't realise they kept onto the name for so long, but in any case whoever's decision it was to change the lyrics from Bounce to Waste was definitely right. Similarly, restoring "It's In Your Hands Now" works much better for me.

I found the original article! He explains the title change here.

I agree, “It’s In Your Hands Now” is much better than the fluffy “Opportunity.”

Hilariously there appears to have been an article in the NYtimes about this.
