Rob Marshall to direct film version of NINE

Kidman is also superb in the upcoming Noah Baumbach movie, in which she is incredibly strong and sympathetic.
They'd be a lot smarter to cast people like Kidman and Cate Blanchett than people like Lindsay Lohan or Demi Moore - I'm not sure if Marshall is a brilliant enough director to make that kind of casting not seem laughable in the eyes of most critics.

Posted: 4/13/07 at 2:40amI applaud Kidman's efforts to be warm and vulnerable, but I'm never convinced. Her demeanor and breathy execution makes her always seem so distant to me. Plus, she always seems like she's obviously trying to show us that she's working on her craft that it all seems too methodological rather than natural and convincing.
re: Rob Marshall to direct film version of NINE#153
Posted: 4/13/07 at 2:40amI actually agree with Munk. Kidman can read really ice queenish. but she's an actress, give her a chance
re: Rob Marshall to direct film version of NINE#154
Posted: 4/13/07 at 2:41amI like the Catherine Keener and Carla Guigino ideas! I also don't think I would object to some new talent in a role or two, hopefully getting to see some new talent along with the old.

And let's just say...
As you're all perusing my list, keep in mind, I imagined them being filmed in black and white with a SH*TLOAD of eyeliner...

re: Rob Marshall to direct film version of NINE#157
Posted: 4/13/07 at 2:57ammunk-- I like a lot of your suggestions, but Cruz is more of a Claudia than a Carla.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

RE: NINE cast recording. I don't think anything beats the OBCR, every single performer is amazing and I love how they did two takes in which the performers sang the whole show. It's great, I love it. The revival has a more "modern" feeling to it and the cast is excellent of course (except for the great Chita Rivera who is a bit irritating in this cast recording). I cannot stand Jonathan Pryce as Guido in the London concert.
RE: Movie. Cruz NEEDS to play Claudia, I highly doubt Cruz can sing "Unusual Way" as high as Ms.Benanti did in the revival, but if you hear Shelly Burch's original version, it is a lot more simple and in a way nicer. I prefer it. Toni Collette is the one actress I've heard whom I think could make a brilliant, efficient, and show-stealing Luisa. I think Kidman wouldn't be a bad choice, but Collette would be much better. When Krakowski is passed for Carla, Marshall should try to get Salma Hayek (I suggested her for Luisa but thinking about she'd make a better Carla). I think Serraghena, Liliane Le Fleur, and Guido's mother will be a bit harder to cast though.

Posted: 4/13/07 at 5:59amOne thing about recordings--isn't the Revival essentially a highlights one now that the OBCR has been restored to fill 2 CDs? Or am I wrong? I admit I don't knwo the show as well as I should

"I think Kidman's pretty ideal for Luisa. We know she has the voice,"
I am going to totally disagree with you here. I love Nicole Kidman, but she is not an alto. And Luisa is an ALTO. Not a mezzo soprano..ALTO. We're talking notes in the bass clef alto. The score even comes with Luisa's songs transposed up a step as an option because they are so low. Unless they raise the vocal part significantly, there is no way Kidman can sing it. She's a soprano....a mezzo at best. So, maybe I'm the only one, but I could see her as Claudia.
And EricMontreal--Neither of the recordings are the entire show. The remastered OBCR is nearly all of it, but there are parts of Grand Canal on the Revival CD that dont' appear on the OBCR. I just did this show in the fall, and there's no recording out there that has it all!

Let's just hope they don't kill the Overture - one of my favorite things about 9....however, it's safe to assume that it'll be cut, no?
My casting choices:
Carla - Scarlett Johansson
Luisa - Nicoletta Braschi
Claudia - Rose McGowan
Lillianne - Jennifer Coolidge

Posted: 4/13/07 at 9:10amMunk-It's funny. You have Kristn Scott Thomas down for two roles, both of which I don't think she's entirely right for. I think she would actually make a great Luisa, if she can hit those notes. Also, I think that Joely Richardson would be great in this. I think her beauty is perfect for the look of this. And speaking of Nip/Tuck, I think Famke Janssen would be a great Carla.

I don't know if she has name recognition enough to sell.
But, I just envisioned Sara Ramirez singing "Be Italian" and I think I wet myself.
She would be an amazing Saraghina.

I know I'm being silly, but i'd like to see Barbra Streisand as LaFleur- even if she changed nationalities.
PS I love the orchestral production on the revival cd.
PPS In the London concert, wasn't Elaine Paige replaiced at short notice by Sarah Brightman, or was it the other way round?

I'm really looking forward to this! I hope they shoot some of it on location in Venice.
I also would love it if they utilized a few choice cinematic techniques/devices. I can see several of the flashback or fantasy scenes playing out in Black & White.
They need to think like Fellini. Not (necessarily) like Tommy Tune.

The keys of the songs will be surely be altered for the movie, Wendy - don't you think? I can't imagine a star who can sing being passed up for the role because the actress can't do the notes in Karen Akers key.
Yes, I definitely hope its at least partly filmed in black and white. Maybe the Grand Canal sequence in blazing color?
I don't think NINE is a a good project for Toni Collette. I do love the idea of Catherine Keener.

Posted: 4/13/07 at 10:20amAssuming Guido is 40 or 41 ("My body's clearing forty..."), I think I'd buy the spectacularly-in-shape Mr. Banderas at 46 as a man having a mid-life crisis rather than Mr. McGregor, who's a bit too young at 36.

Saraghina - Bette Midler
No one else would be better.

Rob Marshall is already quoted as saying:
"This one needs to be created specifically for the talent involved, to suit their strengths."
The characters and material will be altered to fit the actors chosen to play the parts, not vice versa.

I thought Mr. Marshall did an extraordinary job with Chicago, and personally, I liked the film a lot more than I liked the stage show.
Nine isn't one of my favorite musicals, but I will be anxiously awaiting its release to see what he comes up with. I think he is a gifted director, and even though Geisha wasn't a complete financial success, I hope he continues to take on more film projects. It would also be nice if he would come back to Broadway once in a while!

"Maybe the Grand Canal sequence in blazing color?" I agree, MB! A perfect spot for the Technicolor treatment.
I also don't mean to imply that the film needs to be filled with with cinematic gimmicks. Just a few good choice decisions here and there. It shouldn't be "Baz Luhrmann-ized."
Baz's approach works very well when his story and the emotions are very simple, strong and straight-forward. Then, they can be embellished and enhanced with innovative visual and aural "candy."
But NINE has a complex, non-linear storyline and multi-layered emotions from most of the characters. Too much "candy" will only confuse it.
I hope Marshall also takes the time to "linger" on the actors' faces. Show the raw emotion of each of these characters. THAT (to me) is were the wow-factor will come in. Not in running the camera around or in playing with VFX or SFX.
But seeing Louisa's face in stark, gritty, harshly-lit Black & White, lingering... while she sings, "Long ago... Someone else ago..."
...could be devastating.
