I don't think it would be a problem as long as they can pass as Italian. I like the idea of Edie Falco as Luisa.
I never actually saw NINE, but I adore the music so I'm pretty excited for this.

EDIE FALCO as Luisa? Are you nuts? I want to hear the score sung, not lisped and growled through.
Italian Americans are nothing like real Italians, for the most part.

I realize that. I've been to Italy a number of times.
Don't base her Luisa on Carmella Soprano.

Posted: 4/12/07 at 10:53pmOkat, mine was on an "if she can sing" basis. Apaprently I should reconsider?

Foa, I'm not ALWAYS talking to you. I'm often speaking in broad, general terms to the whole board.
I'm not basing my assessment of Falco on THE SOPRANOS. I don't even watch THE SOPRANOS. I'm not talking about the character she plays, I'm tlaking about her list, her nasaly voice. It just doesn't sound very melodic. I can't imagine her singing the gorgeous score- that's all.

I know you're not talking directly to me, munk.
But you did say "Are YOU nuts?" in response to my suggestion to Edie Falco. So, I figured it was to me. And I stepped in to give my view is all.

Posted: 4/12/07 at 11:03pmI actually thought your suggestion was a joke, my "ARe You Nuts?" statement was supposed to be to dancing, who said they liked the idea.

I too had heard the studio was holding off on announcing the project until they had the male lead signed on. The fact that they've already gone after McGregor and went ahead and put out the press release anyway leads me to believe they weren't able to get him (or are waiting on a more solid commitment, even though I think they would have held off on making the news of the movie public until he was officially contracted.)
My guess is that it'll end up being Banderas. They're going to want some sort of a recognizable box office figure and people like Clive Owen and Gael García Bernal (while interesting choices) are not nearly as recognizable to mainstream audiences as Antonio is (though the true star wattage is going to come in the casting of the women.)
Catherine Zeta-Jones as Luisa and Marisa Tomei as Carla would be absolutely stellar casting. I'd also maybe like to see Sophia Loren as Lillian.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Posted: 4/12/07 at 11:26pmI'd like to see Carla Gugino in the mix somewhere. She's beautiful, talented, and pretty recognizable. Plus her name just screams "Put me in Nine! Put me in Nine!"

Posted: 4/12/07 at 11:47pmyes, I agree. She would probably be great for Luisa, but I don't know if she can sing.

Posted: 4/12/07 at 11:48pmShe'd even be a great Carla.

Is Lainie Kazan too old to play Saraghina?
Yea, she is. But a boy can dream. Her version of "Be Italian" would be breath-taking.

Posted: 4/12/07 at 11:58pmHow about Javier Bardem for Guido? Can he sing?

Well I meant for you guys to read my mind and suggest the best/most complete one so I don't have to bother doing the research myself.

I like them all.
I think the OBC is the most complete though.

I have yet to listen to the London recording (Jonathan Pryce, Ann Crumb, and Elaine Paige), so out of the OBC and the revival my personal fav is the revival. The revival has a more "cleaner" sound and the actor's voices are easier to listen to. The OBC does have some excellent things going for it. Raul Julia is excellent and the character of Guido really comes through, Anita Morris is amazing in "A Call From The Vatican" and breaks your heart in "simple". The revival has Antonio Banderas who gives a splendid performance and his "Bells of Saint Sebastian" is very haunting. Mary Stuart Masterson gives a surprisingly vocally strong performance as Louisa and Laura Benanti is the highlight for me on the revival cd singing "Unusual Way"

Benanti was in the revival, wasn't she?
I guess I'll find my way into the score through the revival, then go to the others once I have my ears around the songs and style etc. Thanks!

Posted: 4/13/07 at 12:32amYeah, the revival was brilliant. It was Antonio Banderas, Mary Stuart Masterson, Laura Benanti, Chita Rivera, Jane Krakowski. One of the best casts ever.

The revival is my favorite of the 3, but if you like it definitely check out the others. The London one is cool because it was a concert that was recorded live, and it had a big chorus that included men.
