Ok, blase
Definitely the continental type - not the British type of sophistication.
But it will still have to be an actor who is widely recognizable in America. I don't think casting it with an European actor will ensure box office success. Of course, Fellini cast Marcello Mastrionani ( sp?) in 8 1/2, but it seems there is now a dearth of recognizable European actors to American movie audiences, except perhaps for Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz.

How about Hugh and Penelope in the cast?

I mean, how familiar are you with Italian unknowns? HOw would you know if such a person were actually in the movie?
Jo: I think Hugh is all wrong. Plus, his nasaly voice wouldn't suit Guido.

Hugh can look European - take a look at that photo. Old-world charm and male elegance. He is also about the right age ( when they get to do the film
) and can hold off his own against 16 women. He did play a man of the world in Scoop. He does accents very well - although mostly British aristocrat( The Prestige, Scoop, and Kate and Leopold) and BBC English ( Flushed Away) and American. He did try to sound Spanish in a segment of The Fountain
...Not sure if he used a bit of a Dutch accent for Van Helsing. And I believe Wolverine is Canadian.
Yes, his voice in TBFO was nasaly ( that must be his Aussie accent) - but he sounded very different in OKLAHOMA!... ditto for the CAROUSEL concert and SUNSET BOULEVARD... NO ONE IS ALONE/CHILDREN WILL LISTEN from INTO THE WOODS? I think there is great versatility in his singing voice as well.
He is proving to be a very fine actor now - I think the role will be a good challenge for him.

Well, I'm guessing Marshall will go the way he did with CHICAGO and try to squeeze in as many big names as possible.
But, as a kind of throwback to Italian culture I'd love to see a well known Italian artist featured in this movie. Whether they're recognizable or not to the public, she probably wouldn't be in a major part anyway.
For instance, Laura Pausini (featured above) is a very well known Italian pop artist. It would be great to see her somewhere in this movie.

Not only an Italian actress but maybe also a French actress. Didn't Fellini cast Claudia Cardinale and Anouk Aimee in " 8 1/2"?

Laura Pausini? Is she still around? I don't think she should be in this movie. I'm sorry but if I see NINE make it to film, it better be with a top-notch cast though Pausini might be good as one of the many "la, la, la" women.
How about Jane Krakowski for Lady of the Spa? She was supposed to play the role in the original production when Tommy Tune wanted a young teenager to be Lady of the Spa, the idea was nixed but still, it'd be nice to see her somewhere in the film.
Can Kathi Moss or Lilianne Montevecci get a cameo?

Ray, I already said Pausini would never get one of the starring roles.
I mentioned her as a possible cameo or featured ensemble part.

Posted: 4/15/07 at 2:11pmSorry FOAnatic, I should've read your post more carefully. Pausini has a great voice indeed (when I lived in South America I was just about the biggest Pausini fan) and yes, she should have a cameo, like I said, it'd be great if she were one of the "la, la, la" women, meaning part of the ensemble kind of like Mia was in CHICAGO.

Though Marshall was ultimately criticized for his casting for MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA - the initial idea behind it - to cast a bevy of internationally recognized Asian film stars (with huge popularity in their local film markets) was a smart one - and it did help GEISHA in the global box office tremendously.
I don't know if there are that many European actresses unknown in the US with huge followings over-seas - but I imagine Marshall and Weinstein will make a point of picking a cast that will have international appeal - even if all aren't US superstars.

This could be really good or really bad.
But it's not going to be in between.

re: Rob Marshall to direct film version of NINE#219
Posted: 6/12/07 at 12:35pmSame. I didn't really like Chicago on Broadway but I loved the movie.

Rob Marshall is a man that I trust. He'll make it work.
What about Catherine Zeta Jones as Carla?
and Liza Minelli as Lilianne Le Fleur?

Posted: 6/12/07 at 12:55pmI am very excited about this. I think it will be great and the casting possibilities are endless! It would fantastic if they could get Sophia Loren in there somewhere or Chita Rivera but I am not sure in what parts.
