Rob Marshall to direct film version of NINE

Something tells me this will go the way of the Rob Marshall DAMN YANKEES.
Almodovar would never direct this because he would never be so tacky as to remake a Fellini film. Besides wasn't ALL THAT JAZZ already the movie musical remake of 8 1/2?

No one is remaking a Fellini film.

Munk - pretty much, yes.
You need someone over the top for that part. Coolidge is way too over the top....but it's still something funny to think about.
I still say Rose McGowan for Claudia. She's got that mysterious movie star look.

...because this is a movie now, not a Broadway show.

The very thought of Marshall consciously trying to ape or hommage Fellini makes me VERY nervous.
Visually Fellini's movies (and I'm a big fan particularly of his 50s work I admit) don't sing in a musical way at all.
re: Rob Marshall to direct film version of NINE#182
Posted: 4/13/07 at 7:23pmHe isn't. It doesn't say anywhere that he will be paying homage to Fellini. He just might, but for all we know he could be thinking of something entirely different for the piece.
re: Rob Marshall to direct film version of NINE#183
Posted: 4/14/07 at 7:56amWell, I disagree about Fellini's images not "singing." There's more visual music in the first three minutes of 8 1/2 than in anything Rob Marshall could ever excrete onto the screen.

Borstalboy, All That Jazz isn't a movie musical verison of 8 1/2, it just happens to be compared to 8 1/2 a lot. Like how 8 1/2 is based on Fellini's life, All That Jazz is based on Fosse's own life. I don't think Fosse had an intention for his movie and Fellini's movie to be compared to each other, it just happens that both are incredibly simular.
Of course, I could be completely wrong and what I'm saying is bull****. I mean, I don't study film or anything, so I'm not an expert. That's just what I've picked up from it.

Tons of people could do these roles, but you've got to cast them well, or the entire thing will fall apart.
No matter how brilliant Liza Minnelli (which I think is all wrong), Robert Downey (eh), Jennifer Coolidge (hell, no) or anyone like Demi Moore would all be - NO one would take them seriously. NO one.
You can't tell me that Liza would be on screen singing "FOLLIES" and no one would laugh. It would be camp.

Again, they want a widely recognizable name for Guido. Downey Jr doesn't fit that bill (though he is an interesting choice.)
While certainly not "A list," at least most people know who Antonio Banderas is.

The typical A-lister wouldn't work here. Celebrities who are more private and/or not in the public eye as much will be able to pull off the whole heavely accented Italian thing.
I mean, imagine Jennifer Aniston or Brad Pitt doing this. No.

I agree with you, Munk, I believe for NINE the casting should start with people who are actors, not necessarily stars.
I really do hope Banderas ends up headlining this project, he would be so magnificent.
I actually like the idea of Rose McGowan as Claudia, and she can actually sing. Cruz would be great though, it's so hard to find good projects for her in American cinema that she should definitely be cast in this role that seems to be such a perfect fit.

Posted: 4/14/07 at 9:32pmI dunno, I know it's not fair but I firmly belong to the "Cruz is a wonderful actress but only when she's not working in the English language" school... Then again that shcool usually feels the same way about Antonio

From the Variety article --
"... Marshall, along with Harvey and Bob Weinstein, are currently in the process of finding a screenwriter, leading man, and leading ladies.
On finding his actors, Marshall told the industry paper, "This one needs to be created specifically for the talent involved, to suit their strengths," he said. "Casting will be a big issue here, and if commitments complicate things, it will be 2009."..."
It looks like they are looking at busy A-list actors, with possibly many present commitments, who can sing - maybe at least for the role of Guido? Or will they go like they did with actors like Renee Zellwegger ( who was not really known to be a singer) as they did in CHICAGO?
I wonder if 2009 is when they will start filming or when they plan to screen the movie.

Posted: 4/15/07 at 12:50amNINE is a lot different from CHICAGO. For NINE, you don't just have to sing and look good in fishnets. You've got to be smart to do NINE.

Why anyone would expect Rob to care about ethnicity after the way he cast Geisha is beyond me--just as China is close enought o Japan I'm sure the British Isles are close enough to Italy
To be fair I'm sorta two minded about the whole subject of casting to play intot he ethnicity of the role--i can see both pros and cons

It's straight forward.
If you can pass, you can play.
That's it. For most people, a Chinese girl can play a Japanese girl and people will have no idea. That's what it's about. A Nigerian can play a Ugandan. Fine. They PASS.
But what's important with NINE isn't the specific ethnicity - with the right makeup, costumes, director, etc. ANYONE can do the roles. They've just got to have a certain look about them. A sophistication and style that's very European - but being Italian isn't necessary.
And THAT is why Antonio Banderas pulled it off. It's also why someone like Richard Gere never could.

I think I know exactly what you mean -- I was once at the Nice airport for the Monaco Grand Prix -- and you can see the types - from clothes to hairstyle to worldly air ( sometimes, almost bored-looking). A certain savoir-faire that is unmistakable.
