Did anyone happen to catch Roger Rees' first performance as Gomez? How is he different in the role, and is he an improvement?

Posted: 3/23/11 at 12:14amHe plays it very different from Nathan (more like Raul Julia), but still needs some time to settle into the role. There were some moments where he was excellent ("Happy/Sad") and others where the lines just weren't landing. I honestly do think (and hope) he will improve...it will be interesting to see how long the show lasts now that Nathan is gone...the theater wasn't full tonight.

@rosscoe(au) I saw Nathan as Gomez on Youtube videos of the Chicago previews, and he seemed to epitomize everything about the character, but at times I felt the camp was a little much for me.
@WithoutATrace I love Raul Julia's intepretation, so if Roger Rees is similar in method, then count me in.

Of course how stupid of me, watching something on video is really the same as being in the theatre to see the performance. I can finally understand how a preview video made your mind up, that Lane was horrible.
Did you write to the producers asking for your money back!

rosscoe(au), when did he say Lane was horrible?
This is a simple thread, don't be a dick.

It is humanly IMPOSSIBLE to improve on what Nathan Lane brought to the role -- his performance was never questioned by anyone... not the audience nor the critics. The show was another thing.

Posted: 3/23/11 at 3:41pmI'm sure Roger Rees will do a great job. I saw and loved him in the Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, as well as Indiscretians with Kathleen Turner and Lincoln Center's A Man of No Importance. If given the opportunity, I'd go back and see Addams Family again for his potrayal of Gomez.
