I'm sorry if the Jonathan Larson thing was already covered but, in the RENT bible it talks about Jonathans girlfriends or how he was involved with someone.
I did doubt Rosario, but boy was i impressed. She took Mimi's character, put a spin on her and BAM, did a great job.
So did the others, as i said before on many threads, the WHOLE cast did an amazing job!
I agree with you muscle 100%. I thought Rosario was the weakest link in this. Mya would have done a better job, but Mya isnt that great of a singer and I don't really care about her as a singer or dancer.
I also thought Tracie shouldnt have been in here. They should have put Frenchie in there... LOL.
I may be way off, but do some of you have a problem with Tracie and Rosario simply because they are the only non-OBC.... I thought they were both amazing and definitely kept up with the rest of the cast!
They both blew me away.

" Mya would have done a better job, but Mya isnt that great of a singer and I don't really care about her as a singer or dancer.
So you'd rather see someone whose singing and dancing you really don't care about sing and dance in a film?!! This doesn't make sense. And as far as Mya being better than Rosario I guess we will never know now will we?
I guess what I'm getting at is that I would respect your opinion more if it made any sense.
The majority have given Rosario great notices for her performance. This from someone who wasn't in the original broadway show and who people really doubted would be able to do the role. She passed the test with flying colors and it's all up there on the screen.
I guess her naysayers were waiting for her to fu(k it up and were so obviously proven wrong.
Rosario was GREAT!!! i was soooo pleasantly surprised and in my opinion she gave one of the BEST performancances in the film.. She really captured the spirit of RENT and MIMI. ADAM however...MAJOR dissappointment. i kept wanting to shake him vigorously while saying "wake up to your world and whats happening around you!" Ugh... no reactions at all. I didnt get that he was tormented or that he even truly loved mimi. Rosario bless her heart gave him soooo much material to respond and react to. he missed the bus here big time. I guess what i loved about him so much in the stage production was his electrifying voice and presentation of the songs. Clearly he held back here (or maybe was directed to) for the film and revealed himself to be a very under skilled actor. especially against the brilliance of others. oh well.
Rosario Dawson was the BEST thing in that misguided train wreck of a film.

i thought the film was amazing....not a train wreck? and i did like Rosario!!!

Rosario was great in the role. Her singing was good enough and her "Out Tonight" sex kitty dancing was fantastic...her emotional connection with the character was right. Her portrayal of the role was very strong. The strongest going from stage to screen was easily Jesse L. Martin. He brought life to EVERY scene he was in regardless of content (giving energy but also toning it down just enought to compensate for film. The weak link in the film for me was Adam Pascal. Nice voice, but just not physically and emotionally connected. He seemed to have a wall up which made his acting quite 2 dimensional. The rest of the cast was great though. Nice film.
~ interesting point you brought up ddtruitt you've basically echoed my friend samuel's feelings ~ he told me last night he *felt* the relationship between angel and collins and angel's death really affected him he didn't feel the same way when it came to roger and mimi's relationship. . .
Rosario was FAR from the weakest link in this film. She was probably one of the best things about it. The weak acting links for me Were Martin and Pascal. Perviously I had mentioned Rapp, but quite honestly, I don't think he was he who fell short so much as his horribly abbreviated part.
Come on rosario singing is not that weak...mimi doesn't call for the most vocally trained singer to play her anyways...i wish people could just stop complaining.
i've never seen Rent live, i've heard the music a lot though, and Daphne does have a stronger voice than Rosario. In the movie though, i thought Rosario was one of the best. She was the only cast member that i felt was believable in the role. Don't get me wrong i'm a huuuuuuuge Idina fan, and everyone in that movie is amazingly talented but the cast just looked way too old to be playing the roles. They never really mentioned how old everyone was supposed to be, i felt like they were all 30 year olds and i felt like they should have a job by now. Thats the only thing that bothered me, other than that the movie was AMAZING
~ my friend rich felt the same way he's a *huge* rent fan (and that's an understatement) ~ but he felt they should have cast younger people in the roles i really didn't have a problem with it ~ he loved rosario though. and he's a hard-core drv fan.

What I mean't was as a pop star I don't really care for Mya, but she would have done better in the part. And duh, of course we wont ever know, unless she decides to be in Rent on Broadway. That statement didnt make any sense, either.
I thought Rosario and Tracie were the weakest, well, let me just say this: Rosario was good as Mimi in terms of acting, but her singing was the weakest in my opinion. Tracie kinda has a shrill voice and she doesnt seem like the type of woman who would end up with Maureen. I don't know. They should have definitely gotten someone better than Tracie. Definitely. Someone with a stronger voice and better acting skills.
"Rosario Dawson was the BEST thing in that misguided train wreck of a film."
I'd have to strongly disagree. She was good, but i feel some of the other cast members did a better job. Theres no need to call it a 'train wreck', let's try and keep this a happy place please.
I'm strongly biased toward the OBC cast members, but I have to agree with those who've said that Rosario Dawson is far and away the standout of the movie. Her Mimi was so perfect... sexy and spunky and visceral and alive. While I like her singing a lot, it isn't as strong as the others, but her acting is phenominal. She conveys more in a simple glance than some of the others do in the course of an entire song. That's not to say that I disliked any of the performances, not at all, but this part seemed effortless for Rosario. I don't know what it is, but if I had to guess I would say that she is more subtle and skilled with screen acting, whereas most of the others are used to projecting emotion for a theatre audience, which is typically a lot less subtle. Anyway, she definitely knows how to work the camera, and her Mimi was the most absorbing part of the movie.
Wow jaso_n, I couldn't disagree with you more. I heard the soundtrack to the movie before seeing it, and "Take Me Or Leave Me" took my breath away. Tracie's voice is utterly captivating, both in this song and in "Seasons of Love." And she was motivated, powerful, and vulnerable in all the right ways on screen.
