Chief Brody!
I had no idea until reading that article that he was offered De Niro's role in The Deer Hunter, but had to turn it down to film Jaws 2.
I'll have to watch Jaws this week...he was so good in that film, and delivered some really fantastic lines- my favorite one has to be "Tip the boat! Why don't you come on down here and chum some of this sh*t!" Then of course there was, "Smile you son of a b*tch!"

God he was good...
Jaws is amazing.
And his work on All that Jazz is downright unbelievable. He created (or was it re-created?) such an indelible character in Joe Gideon, that I feel like I knew the man. (that might be because it is in my to 5 movies of all time) The last 15 minutes of that movie are glorious. Also, if you get a chance to watch the movie with the commentary, do it. Also check out his interviews about the process of filing that movie with Fosse as director. Truly amazing.
Rest in peace!

Maybe the best doctors for what he had were there.

Posted: 2/10/08 at 10:24pmHe was an amazing Actor. We lose too many, often too young but he lived a long life. Now he won't suffer but what a legacy he left behind!

I, for one, will miss Roy Scheider.
And yes... my screen name is and always has been paying homage to the character he played in JAWS: Chief Brody.
Fosse -- homage to my childhood idol: Bob Fosse, who Roy (as Joe Gideon) was playing in ALL THAT JAZZ.
R.I.P.

Posted: 2/11/08 at 12:18amMy favorite of his movies is a tiny little indie film ~ The Myth of Fingerprints. He didn't say a lot in there verbally, but his presence...he WAS the backbone of that movie.

Very sad...
I always felt that he never had the career that he deserved.

Posted: 2/11/08 at 12:38amThe Universtiy of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is located in Little Rock, and they employee the very top doctor for that form of cancer. So, I would assume that this is the reason he was there.
