My wise husband actually snorted at the contrived deus ex machina strings pulled to make that last scene come out the way it did. He found none of it fairly earned by what had come before.

She was a con woman and a criminal and about as charming as Donald Trump.

I hope she ended up in jail after she fleeced Horace out of all of his cash x

I just want to check and make sure that everyone is aware that Dolly Levi is not a real person. She is a character in a lighthearted comedic romp. In the universe of the show, you either buy into its conceits or you don’t. I see people doing the same thing with Evan Hansen.

We don’t engage with entertainment or even art to see always morally pure people doing morally pure things. Honestly, that would be boring and kind of a cheat as the best entertainment/art reflects back parts of our lives or exposes us to others‘ lives and none of us is morally pure.

I recall when Million Dolllar Baby came out. The extreme right wing accused the movie of condoning euthanasia. It’s ironic now in hindsight that Republicans were condemning a Clint Eastwood movie. I loved the movie and thought Clint’s character’s choices made sense in the context of the movie universe. I did not however ever think of driving from hospital to hospital, disconnecting people from their life support.

I should also note I do not think it is okay to steal a witch’s shoes, practice spells I don’t know and accidentally significantly alter my boyfriend into a non-human, murder my enemies and turn them into meat pies. or make up stories as a missionary in Africa. Love those movies/shows though.

Evan Hansen is dumb 15 year old who makes a silly mistake while suffering from depression. When he comes out of that he owns up to it and shows an incredible amount of remorse for what he has done.

Dolly is a career criminal who finally wins her golden goose but we all know long after the show is finished she will do the same thing to him and have no remorse what so ever as she moves on to the next sucker.

Dolly does what she does to survive in HER world................she needs the money, she needs to connect, she needs to find her way.............is anyone in this world without flaws?   That is what makes us alike.

She finds a way to return to the human race...............she is teacher, guru, mother, lover.........and boy can she eat!    And she IS musical comedy.  Oh, re. Merman:  one of the great joys was to watch this woman work.   Is anyone still interested in getting at least an alley named for her.  The Shuberts made a fortune from this womans work..............they could help to get an alley, a street corner, something named for her.

And this is why Donald Trump is the president of the United States of America...

Well, since there is no sequel to the musical, I am not sure how you would know that with any certainty. I can imagine you have had some trauma related to a matchmaker or someone named Dolly in order to have such vitriol for a character in a lighthearted musical comedy. Either way, every audience member has their own personal reactions to art/entertainment. And you are entitled to hate it as much as I love it.

Yes, because we know Bette Midler is a “huge” Trump supporter. She launched the show with Rudin’s and the Russians’ help just to get Trump elected. In fact she is so ingenious, that she got him elected with a show  that didn’t open until after he was elected!

It has nothing to do with Bette Midler...

Donald Trump was a business man who was going broke and just surviving on Russian funding. He thought running for President would improve his brand. He was just doing what he had to to survive, doing what he does, the only way he knows how.

People fell for his manipulations in the exact same way people fell for Dolly's.

He's just a loveable rogue after all...

That makes as much sense as blaming DEH for real life teenage suicides, blaming Book of Mormon for Mitt Romney’s political career or blaming Frozen for climate change. I’d guess the vast majority who attend Hello, Dolly! are liberal-leaning.

Uh I hate to point out the obvious but Donald Trump has been "losing" kids who were separated from their parents while trying to immigrate, he's called neo-Nazis and white supremacists "very fine people," he's been openly racist and dishonest and just all around awful.

Dolly marries the owner of a hay-and-feed store and sets up young couples. Not really the same thing.

I have nothing much to add to this thread, but I will say just one more thing. Horace Vandergelder marches in the 14th Street Parade because he is a member of the International Order of Loyal Raccoons, which had members across New York including Yonkers.

It is nothing of the sort, now you are just being ridiculous.

The other poster was saying 'she is just doing what she has to to survive' as if that makes it somehow acceptable. I am saying that by making Dolly an 'acceptable loveable criminal' and someone who we should just laugh off, we are letting her off the hook without taking what she does into consideration just because she's likeable.

Ted Bundy and Chales Manson were both supposedly very charming, should be have let them free while cooing and saying 'he seems like such a nice guy'...

It's comparing a real con man to a fake one. If people think all con men are just 'loveable misunderstood rogues' who are doing what they have to to get by, then we end up with one as the President of the United States.

Just to be clear, you are saying that people who loved Hello, Dolly! overwhelmingly voted for Trump? (I can assure you I loved Dolly and did not vote for that dumpster fire). I’m genuinely flummoxed. Even if there were similarities between a fictional comedic character in a lightheaded musical and the worst president the U.S. has ever known, I think it’s a bridge too far to say the audience for the former helped elect the latter.

Would you mind naming your favorite musicals or movies so we can pick them apart and equate them with the fall of the modern republic?

1) Calm down, this is just a light hearted discussion.

2) You are totally misunderstanding what I am saying.

3) I am off to the theatre, we shall discuss this at a later date.

4) Enjoy the rest of your day x

If there's a MT character that REMOTELY resembles Trump it's Elder Price. Except "You and Me But Mostly Me" because "You and Me but Only Me."

Man I wish there was a way you folks would leave POLITICS out of this board. It alienates others and ruins a perfectly fine discussion.

I’ll be seeing the show Wednesday night, my second-ever Broadway experience, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Got my Telecharge email today about being on time, no late seating, and “enjoy the show!”

Sometimes you really need to sit back and be entertained, and not pick everything apart like Miles2Go2 said.

It’s not meant to be rocket science, or Hamlet. Take a chill pill and quit psychoanalyzing everything.

Damn.
