I never got the impression that Dolly Levi takes all of Horace's money and leaves him. Doesn't she do what she does because she wants to rejoin the human race again and stop living as some poor spinster? She's a con man, but she doesn't actually really hurt anybody. In fact she helps everyone get what they were looking for.
By the way, Donald Trump has no where near the skills or smarts of Dolly Levi.
One of the joys of fiction is that we can greatly enjoy the fictional presence of people like Dolly or Mame or Harold Hill... or Han Solo, or any number of other "charismatic, self-serving rogues" that we would absolutely despise being around in real life.
At the end of the show:
- Cornelius gets a raise and promotion and a hot gf
- Barnaby gets a raise and a gf as well
- Irene finds a man who loves her unconditionally
- Ambrose and Ermengarde are allowed to get married
And ... Dolly is stuck with Horace, a man of few charms other than his half million dollars. Always thought that of all the "meddlings" Dolly's meddling for herself gives her the weakest deal.
Idk, there's some likeable stuff about Horace. At the end of the show, I think we learn that the two of them have quite a lot in common.

I'm still laughing at the pontificating of one's "wise husband"'s observations and the direction this thread took. And people say Hello Dolly! was just fluff. This thread has shown otherwise.
This thread is everything I loved about "classic BWW," and I am living for it.

I took a friend to see Book of Mormon for their birthday, yes we both enjoyed it very much, though I had seen it before..
Pick away I didn't write or perform it. It is someone's else's art that I happened to enjoy not an extension of myself x

No need to pick. I love The Book of Mormon! The first time I saw it I stood in the Standing Room line for 6 hours in 40-degree weather in 2012. I made a lifelong friend in line. I just attended the traveling production in OKC with a friend who had never seen it. She adored it! Glad you had a great time.

My first time was also standing in 2013. 27 bucks, bargain! I too had a wonder time in the line though I was only in it for 2 hours and met some very lovely retired Canadian couples who were visiting NYC. Justin Trudeau was in the audience as well, though he wasn't PM yet, they were so excited to see him lol.

Even if set in 1885, which is plain wrong, within a few years hay and feed would be a dying business!
Because farming and livestock ceased to exist? Or that the many other things Vandergelder sold became useless? Or that he couldn't adapt and become a {gasp} a hardware store?

Dolly is just one of many figures who is actually a supernatural being blessed with the power to control others through the powers of song, which she eventually just goes full force with by putting an entire restaurant under her thrall. See also: Mame, Harold Hill and Mary Poppins. And now I want to see a show that entirely consists of the 4 of them fighting over who gets control over one poor soul. There may not be a death toll, but the "wacky hijinx" toll will tally in the millions.

Someone should inform the local hay and feed stores that still exist nearby: https://chestnutvalefeed.net

I've been thinking about this since I saw it last year and this is as good a time as any to ask: can someone explain Dolly's line " I only have large bills, fives and sevens."
Did they have seven dollar bills or is Dolly running a counterfeit operation? :)
