While I dont usually believe rumors, the current Bush gang covers nude art statues in Congress (at taxpayers expense), bans books, pressured Disney about Michael Moore's film, checks your library records, uses character assassinations for dissenters (and that includes former cabinet members). This gang is not above trying to close a show.
I posted about this on another board...what people seem to forget is that the RNC has pressured much bigger organizations that the Roundabout to do as they please. Why are people affraid of believing this to be possible? Why are people affraid of the truth? The truth is that the Roundabout has not given the ticket buying public, their subscribers or their cast, a valid reason for closing the show. They must provide some information. And if the reason truly is poor ticket sales than how do you explain their weekly capacity/sales percentages for the run thus far: 88,91,88,78,86,90,88,95,94,93,96,95 ??
And this theory about the Roundabout dangling the threat of closing out there to get people to buy tix is BS. Yes, this is a ploy used buy many broadway production companies. However any smart/able Marketing team knows that this is first done in a local fan based area, NOT in the national news like Variety. In essance, Roundabout sealed the fate of the show with that decision. Which only leads to more suspicion.
Somebody at Roundabout needs to explain this to the Broadway community, their subscribers and their cast who actually have half a brain, and to who this all makes NO SENSE.
By the way. Roundabout did get Studio 54 thanks to a Bond issue backed by the Republican Mayor of NYC, right?
Please go to the previous post on this topic. I gave you the current box office figures - meaning the CURRENT advance and CURRENT level of daily sales. That is the sole answer...all this conspiracy theory rumour is bunk. The Republicans should more worry about the new novel coming out later in the sumnmer - Checkpoint - in which two men go about various attempts in various ways to assassinate Bush. They never do it - but they come up with all different ways to kill him.
Well, IsaaMe- Are you saying that you work for the Roundabout Co. and are finally speaking on their behalf? I find that very hard to believe. So, if indeed you don't work for the show, you have not "answered" the questions put forth. You have simply stated YOUR opinion to questions not presented to YOU.
And people who say that Republicans should be more affraid of a novel "Checkpoint"(a work of fiction) over the show Assassins (another work of fiction), clearly have no idea what they are talking about and do not understand how politics work outside of what conservavite talk radio has told them.
Actually....I spoke to someone who works at the Roundabout, and closing it is a sound business decision for many reasons (I would never break a confidence, so I will not go into details).
Suffice it to say that not-for-profits really don't make a profit (A CHORUS LINE and CABARET are anomolies that have afforded their not-for-profit's the luxury of taking risks and accruing losses without much impact on the institution). These companies have a responsibility to their boards and donors to keep losses at a minimum. That's all that it comes down to. And it's ridiculous to think otherwise.
