Rush line rudeness?

Today I went to see Jersey Boys and decided to get student rush tickets. There were a few people on the line already and some of them saved spots for at least one friend. You are allowed to get 2 tickets per person and almost everyone did. I did not mind that some people on line saved spots for their friends, even if both of them got 2 tickets each. I see it happen all the time. It's not they are saving spots for an entire army. Saving a spot for one other person I don't think is rude. I didn't think anything of it. However, there was a girl in line that was making HUGE deal abuot how rude it was. I completely disagree. Just thought it was interesting to bring up. Any thoughts?

Well it can make the difference between getting and not getting tickets if suddenly the line doubles in size in front of you.
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

re: Rush line rudeness?

It can make the difference, but I always expect when I see someone alone they are saving spots for their friends. I once saw someone save a spot for about 5 people, now that's wrong. One person, I really don't care.

re: Rush line rudeness?

To be frank, if that happened to me where I was waiting in line all day and there were two people saving spots in front of me for a bunch of other people, I'd tell them to let me get in front of them to make it fair. But it would have to be a bunch of people who aren't getting there for a while.

Jersey Boys does a line for their student rush and not a lottery?

re: Rush line rudeness?

I have to agree with popcultureboy.

If I was the next one in line and I don't get a ticket because people were saving a spot- I'd be pretty pissed.
Of course people would like to save spots- I would too but if you want the ticket- you need to be there to get in the line.

It's like doing 2 lottos across the street from one another and run over to the other one if you name is called.

Not cool.

re: Rush line rudeness?

Yeah, I mean, if there are only something like 14 seats available, it could mean the difference between you getting tickets or not, as popcultureboy pointed out. Especially in a case when 2 tickets are available per person, if someone is holding a place in line for 1 friend, that's 4 tickets they're taking away from a small pot. The whole point of rush is that in order to get the cheap tickets, you have to wait in a line for a while. If someone is not in the line, why should you have dibs on tickets before people who have actually been there waiting?

And yes, dirty rotten guy, Jersey Boys rush is a line, not a lotto.

re: Rush line rudeness?

I think it's okay if 2 people were there and one has to just jet off to go to the bathroom or get a drink. But if they don't show up until after you then they should be behind you. I used to camp out for DMB tix in the city and there were always like scalpers who would be "saving spots for 17 who got there before me and were in the vans" (which was BS because we saw many drive up well after us). In that case I wouldn't mess with them because they're the lowest scum of the earth and could probably beat me up, but in general I would stick up for someone cutting in front of me if they had just arrived.

Ditto, which is why I am so glad that the DRS and Q lotto guys are (apparently) finally cracking down on that- it was getting a little tiring doing the Q lotto for those few 12 seats and watching all these people across the street at DRS (or, my fav: waiting in the middle of the actual street- true story) getting their names pulled and then running over.

re: Rush line rudeness?

i guess the feeling is mixed. i don't mind. people like to help their friends out and if it's only 1 other friend, then i think that's cool. some people can't make it to wait in line so early, so they save a spot, big deal. i'd be pissed though if there was 4 people in front of me and suddenly there were 14 people in front of me.

re: Rush line rudeness?

People did that for cancellation tickets for The Producers and it really pissed me off. That was even worse since there was no set number of tickets available. We thought we were pretty far up in line, then 2 hours later 6 more people would show up and join the one person at the front. Not cool. One more person, eh, I guess that's okay. But a line has to be drawn somewhere.

re: Rush line rudeness?

Speaking of rush lines (and I don't mean to thread jack)...

But during my visit to NYC I am going to lotto quite a few shows, and not always with someone. Is it safe to hope that I can perhaps pair up with another single stranger rushing to better our chances?

Or would people give me the "your crazy" raised eyebrow if I semi-shout: "Anyone wanna couple up with me?"

Haha

Eug, in rush, it would be wierd, not so much in a lotto. When are you going to be in NY? If I'm home, I might be able to come give you a hand.

Anakela, I'm pretty sure at DRS they rarely, most likely never, let people get away with that. I've seen many people get their names ripped up. However, the Q person did allow them to get the tickets.

re: Rush line rudeness?

wickedrentq- yeah I'd heard that the DRS guy was a good one for ripping your name up if you were across the street, and the Q guy was always letting people get away with it, but a couple of weeks back at the Q lotto the lotto guy was traning a new person and he was telling the new person how he and the DRS lotto guy have come to an 'agreement,' and so now they're both cracking down and making people choose one lotto and ripping up names. I haven't been back to the Q lotto since, so I haven't actually seen a name ripped up there yet. But I've heard it will be done. :)

Eug- I have a suggestion: when you put your name down in lotto always put it for 2 tix. Then, in that half-hour or whatever before the drawing you have time to chat up single strangers. I'd say 80% of the time you'll come acros a single stranger, or someone who is part of a group of three who you could join in on, etc. However, if you don't find anyone, you can always 'drop down to one' when your name asking for two tix is pulled.

re: Rush line rudeness?

Saving a place in a rush line is perfectly fine if someone's just gone for a short time to grab food or to go to the bathroom. Other than that it is very bad line etiquette to be saving spots, and in all the times I've done the line for Rent over the years, it's not allowed.

re: Rush line rudeness?

The one time I had to save a spot for a friend who was coming a few hours later, I felt so ashamed and guilty (because I'd be pissed if someone did that and I was sitting behind them) that I apologetically told the people behind me my situation as they arrived and bought cookies for everyone sitting after me in the line-up. It's still not something to make a habit of, but when worst comes to worst, that's the classy way to do it without getting people understandably peeved at you.

re: Rush line rudeness?

Like mostly everyone else said, one or two people saving spots is typical, you almost have to expect it -- a lot of people and/or stopping YOU from getting tickets is kinda rude.

I've had a similar experience where I've been the "rude" person, I suppose. At the RENT movie CD signing at Virgin, a bunch of friends and I (who are on this board) were out all night for fun in line. A few of them stayed behind in the morning in the line, and saved a spot for those of us who had to leave for various reasons (I needed to change and this was last minute so my clothes were in Queens!) One girl had a doctor's appt., and other things. When I returned they were at the very front of the line and the line itself extended the whole way around the building. Now, there were no numbers and we had our wrist bands and obviously, everyone in the line was going to get through. She started FLIPPING OUT on me that I needed to get to the back of the line because I wasn't with them all day. Why the hell would I go to the back of the line BY MYSELF if all of my friends were at the front? Sense? No. Then two other girls came back and she stormed inside to go talk to someone about it. No one bothered us, and the employees definitely defended us and said that we were waiting much longer than she did. The woman left, as well as the other two people who were with her.
