As opposed to the people who just say "Mendes' production sucked" over and over? At least I say why I think Laurents' production sucks.
Yeah, but sweetie, when you use the same reason over, and over, and over again, it becomes invisible.
Try something new.
The thing is, that is my reason. I'm sorry it's repetitive, but I don't know how else to say it.
Dainty June whipping out a cigarette is SO subtle isn't it?

Never again do I want to sit through an awful production like that again.

It wasn't that bad...it was just ridiculously overdone.
I'm honestly curious as to why people think the Mendes production was overdone.
Maybe he tried too hard to make a concept musical out of a show that isn't a concept musical? lol
I personally didn't get any concept musical vibe from it.
Speaking of GYPSY as a concept musical, director and choreographer Jerome Robbins did originally consider that route. He saw GYPSY as a history of vaudeville interconnected with the lives of Rose and her two daughters. He actually held auditions for animal acts, jugglers, and gymnasts. Laurents nixed that idea, except for the wonderful stripers' "You Gotta Have a Gimmick", and Louise's strip scenes. The 1959 production had the tacky, hilarious "Minsky's Salute to Christmas", undone by Laurents in subsequent productions with "Minsky's Garden of Eden" number.

I never saw this revival. All I know was that he did it sort of Brechtian style with very little scenery and apparently at one point, Dainty June whipped out a cigarette. Anything else?
there was a really long boa during The Strip.
People either love it or hate it. I think you all know where I stand.
I saw the Mendes production - once. I'm a fan of the show "Gypsy" itself, saw it with Angela Lansbury as a child, and went to innumerable performances of the Tyne Daly and Patti LuPone productions, but I could only sit through the Mendes thing once. To me, it was only interesting on a historical level because they tried to recreate some of the actual costumes from Dainty June's vaudeville act.
"Gypsy closed May 30, 2004 and her husband died in a helicopter crash September 26, 2005. I believe she had quite a few concerts scheduled, which she cancelled (obviously)."
YankeeFan, Bernadette had many concerts scheduled in the fall of 2005 but she did not cancel any of them including the first one, less than 2 weeks after her husband's tragic accident. She did acknowledge it briefly at that concert (I was there), I think mostly because she had to as everyone knew what had happened. When she first walked out on stage that night, the audience applauded like crazy. Everyone was just pulling for her, knowing it was an extremely difficult time for her. It was a very different type of concert than she usually gives but still a glorious performance.

Elphaba3 - Just curious, have you seen Patti's Gypsy live?
No. Maybe seeing it live would have changed my opinion. Maybe it wouldn't have. Unfortunately I'll never know.
Are you KIDDING me?!
You have gone on and on in thread after thread putting down this production, and you never even SAW it?!
Give me a break.

All I have to say is thank you, God, for the blessing that was the 2008 Broadway revival of Gypsy, it was pure perfection.
What was so good about the 2008 revival besides the cast?
