Fantastic news. Congratulations to all involved. The Seagull was a brilliant production with excellent actors. I'm glad that New Yorkers are seeing this and enjoying it.
I suspect the second show to recoup will be Liza's at the Palace! (crosses fingers)

I wouldn't say "not exactly a surprise". When this Seagull was announced for Broadway, there was quite a bit of skepticism here about whether it was a "necessary" production and that New York had seen too many Seagulls. Then, the economics of recouping capitalization and transfer costs within a limited 14 week run were definitely a roll of the dice. Add in the economic downturn this fall, and you wouldn't think Chekhov on Broadway would be a surefire moneymaking proposition. I think the fact that it did recoup and seems to be the first show of the 2008-2009 season to do so IS a surprise.

Posted: 12/8/08 at 10:57amI was just going to say. In the current economic climate, I am kind of shocked that a production of THE SEAGULL would recoup. I am thrilled that a Chekhov play without any tabloid celebrities in the cast would recoup, it's fantastic news. Congrats to everyone involved.

Posted: 12/8/08 at 11:00amI'm getting the vibe lately that quality theatre is starting to make a comeback. The audience I've been in at Gypsy and South Pacific this year have been nothing but enthused and attentive...and sold out.

Posted: 12/8/08 at 12:04pmWord to the posts above me - a highbrow play with no big stars is never, ever a sure bet, but this is a nice production that made it. Congratulations to them, and I hope this sets a precedent.

Posted: 12/8/08 at 12:09pmWith all the bad news lately about shows closing or never even making it to Broadway because of economic issues, I was really glad to read that Seagull recouped. Good for them! I hope it encourages more investors and producers to take a chance on quality shows.

Posted: 12/8/08 at 1:21pmThis is such fantastic news. This is one of those productions you feel honored to have witnessed. It's a great thing to see that quality is still a huge influence in what audiences look for. Good for you, cast and crew of THE SEAGULL! Hope I get one last chance to see it before it closes.

re: SEAGULL recoups#11
Posted: 12/8/08 at 4:15pmBrantley's approval wasn't enough, for example, for the IMO even better revival of Journey's End. I don't know if it's luck or timing or what, because it's not like The Seagull is much more cheerful - maybe it had better marketing.

JOURNEY'S END failed because of its subject matter: to make myself sound like the producer in SUNSET BOULEVARD: "Who wants to see another war play?"
And yes, Brantley also raved for JOURNEY'S END, but his review for THE SEAGULL literally said "this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance." I read the review, and I wanted to rush out to see it right away, even though I had, and have, no money.
