To those of you here on this message board who think that Sean Hayes can't act, well he CAN ACTUALLY act as he is a talented and gifted piano player having played since the age of 5 and having gone to ISU for majoring in Piano and Conducting/Performance. He is an accomplished pianist. On Inside The Actors Studio, James Lipton heard him play the piano on Saturday Night Live and that in his opinion he plays VERY VERY well. Sean Hayes is a freaking brilliant piano player! And he can act and does act with perfection, comic brilliance, and exceptional performances every single time he steps out on a stage. He is a good singer. He plays to the audience and gets laughs and that is what a true professional actor is supposed to do.
I know that some of you prefer Victor Garber in the role. Jerry Lewis played the role too. Sean Hayes played Jerry Lewis and the man himself gave him great reviews of his performance in Martin & Lewis with impeccable timing and so real too. That is the highest compliment from actor to actor IMO. These awards are solid proof that YES, Sean Hayes CAN act and ACTUALLY does just that every performance he is in. Sean Hayes got alot of good reviews in his role as Thomas in the film, The Bucket List starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. In fact, the reviewers made comments that he was "under-used" and they would have liked to see more screen time with Sean and a larger part in the film. So Sean Hayes CAN ACTUALLY act.

Posted: 7/14/08 at 11:12amI think what we were saying was sort of "If there is a tumor in your brain, do you really want it removed by a sports medicine specialist?" Nobody said he can't - or doesn't - act. I think people on this site are just saying he may not be the right actor for this role. The world is full of miscasting. This is nothing new.

he can act, but only as Jack McFarland. he was, without question, the weakest cast member of DAMN YANKEES.

OK, this made me spit soda out on the monitor. I'm actually surprised the Taylor Hicks Soul Patrollers haven't found their way over here yet.

He can act. His take on Jack McFarland was a study in comic genius. His role in PIECES OF APRIL was fantastic. And he even did a neat job in BILLY'S FIRST HOLLYWOOD KISS or whatever that movie is called.
Did he act in DAMN YANKEES? Nope, he did not. He decided to play Hayes as Jack as Applegate. Completely miscast. There was absolutely nothing evil, intimidating, or commanding about his Applegate. Cheyenne Jackson could soooo have taken him. Hell, Jane could have taken him.
His "Those Were the Good Old Days" was a Sean Hayes club act, not a number delving into Applegate's evil, fun character.
It's John Rando's fault really, as the director it was his job to make Hayes ACT, instead he let him to his schticky routine which hurt the show...A LOT. I will say that Hayes' voice is in top shape.
