Sending good thoughts from Crystal City (VA)! :)

My guess is good notices will go the cast (Brantley loves Sutton, right? And I thought she was the weakest of the leads), and the bad notices will go to the production team and the concept.

If she did make it up...what a chit move, it's like TooDarnHot all over again.

He turned into Liza+Jesus=Patti and then disappeared in a puff of smoke.
RentBoy86, I agree with you that the cast will likely get positive notices and the creative team will be given a hard time.
I of course wish the cast and crew a wonderful evening.

PiraguaGuy2, I almost had a seizure at that post with song titled sprinkled throughout it. I hope you're happy!
Here's hoping for good reviews. I don't want this to be another ATOTC-- it was so depressing how that only ran for a month after so much work and money.

I'm going to put money on Brantley's headline containing the word "green" and the first sentences of the review being a reflection on a show of Broadway past or a moment from the show that he liked/hated the most.
Variety is Positive:
'Countless films of recent decades have set out to spin a gently subversive fairy tale with a contemporary edge, but few have succeeded as wildly as "Shrek." Conjuring genuine enchantment without quaintness or treacly sentimentality, the 2001 movie enlivened its storybook traditions with rude humor, gleefully anachronistic pop-culture references and knockabout characters brimming with heart. That recipe remains largely intact in "Shrek the Musical," along with much of the irreverent charm that's been successively diluted in two overworked screen sequels. If the storytelling is bumpy in patches and the songs don't quite soar, the show never stints on spectacle or laughs, making it a viable contender for a slice of the Disney market on Broadway.'

Holy smokes, what are the odds of a positive review first? Let's hope this is a good omen! As a Little Mermaid fan, I'm used to my review expectations being shattered to smithereens...

Alright alright.
Ah! I'm happy for the positivity from Variety!
Let's keep 'em coming!

He hit the nail right on the spot with that review. Hopefully the others will be just as good!
Yeesh.
AM New York gives the show 1 1/2 Stars out of 4:
'It’s not easy being green. Take Brian d’Arcy James, the talented actor who plays the underdog ogre Shrek in a green fat suit and hamlet. He must also adopt the same Scottish accent used by Mike Myers.
In spite of his booming voice and nuanced acting, it’s hard to appreciate James’ performance amidst the depressing banality that is “Shrek the Musical.”
While the 2001 animated film “Shrek” parodied the sentimentality and confined gender roles in Disney fairy tales, Dreamworks has fallen prey to Disney’s method of awkwardly replicating its animated films on Broadway. Talk about irony!'

I liked how Variety implied that not one, but two characters (Donkey, Farquaad) are gay.
Wow, only two reviews, and it's already running the gamut.
Back to the first review... I'm not sure how I feel about it comparing Shrek to "Wicked" musically.
Weird how both reviews make Sutton out to be the saving grace of the show.

Those four lead performances ARE really amazing.
What's up with this lack of recognition and esteem for (what I'm told is) an amazing performance by Christopher? I mean, really? Well, we're just gettin' started, my friends.
Let's hope for the best.

I'm surprised Sutton is getting such accolades. I felt like she was mediocre at best, and I'm usually a huge fan!
A few things:
1. Why did they open on a Sunday matinee (it's usually opening "night") Have other shows opened on a matinee? I can't think of any...
2. Regarding the whole TDH/L+J=P thing from before, not that I would want him to but couldn't he just make a new email address and then sign up as a new member? (hope he doesn't read this and get ideas...) how would the mods know?
3. Schmerg - I just wanted to comment that Variety wasn't referring to Wicked... it said vintage Schwartz (so old Schwartz - Pippin, Godspell) with which I think there are some similarities). Also, I don't think the second review refers to Sutton Foster as the "saving grace", i think they say D'arcy James is (they only mention her once. though positive, nothing "show saving")

The opening night performance started at 6:00 PM and is going on now.
Word of Mouth is a Rave:
DEBBI: "This is the first show I've been to in a while where I enjoyed every song in the show."
HELEN: "Go see it: you're not gonna see these kinds of actors in one place."
MAGGIE: "The best thing about the show is the joy... it's a gift."
