I enjoyed it, but did anyone else feel like it could've been funnier?
It was cool to see it sung, of course, but they could have included some of the rest of the cast to sing background vocals or something to make it more than just two people singing a great song.

And I thought I couldn't like Amy Adams more than I did...well, I was wrong. She was precious in that clip and SO comfortable and loose, truly phenomenal. Kristen Wiig is probably the best current SNL cast member (give her the Weekend Update, Seth Meyers is awful at it!!!!!), if only they had writers that could truly exploit all her talent.
I don't think the audience was getting it though. I found it perfect though if that's what they were going for, "There's Always a Woman" is far wittier and funnier.

I find it hard to use "Kristen Wiig" and "Funny" in the same paragraph- unless it's something like, "Hey Kristen Wiig, does this cut on my leg look funny to you?"
She is a one note actress whose one note is grating and annoying.

I don't love everything she does, but I do love a lot of it.
She had me rolling in Knocked up.

she would make a great Glinda in the movie version. in time and with some practice she would probably be great on stage as well. who knows? not to mention she would be original and not a recycled cast member (not to say they all aren't great, but I think someone else deserves a shot

Posted: 3/9/08 at 11:22ambryan, I agree. It was cute but could have been funnier. You had to know the song to really get it. As many people that have seen Wicked, I am sure a lot of people watching the show last night didn't totally get it because they didn't know the song and the show it was from.

Q: Aside from your starring role in the "Theodora Goes Wild" musical, do you have a dream role?
A.(Laughs.) I'll never get my dream roles. I'm wrong for them. Elphaba in "Wicked" or Dulcinea in "Man of La Mancha." I always want to play these dark, complicated roles and I don't think I'm the obvious choice. Not just physically, but my vocal abilities are much more light.
Q: You could be the good witch in "Wicked"?
A.Yes, I know, but I don't want to be the good witch.

Posted: 3/9/08 at 11:46amI didn't know how to react to that opening number. I thought it was going to turn into a parody but when they just sang the song the way it is, it didn't take on any new meaning or get any funnier.

Posted: 3/9/08 at 12:19pmAmy Adams has said in an interview that her dream role is Elphaba in Wicked. The interviewer said, "But you'd make a wonderful Good Witch," and she replied with, "I don't want to play the Good Witch."

Posted: 3/9/08 at 1:36pmSNL has also been used as a platform for movie and TV stars to play to Broadway producers and convince them they would be good on Broadway...

Posted: 3/9/08 at 2:01pmThe ultimate irony of the opening segment is that 90 percent of the people watching have no idea that the song comes from Wicked and most likely thought/laughed at "ooh.. look at that song they made up for SNL tonight"
#41re: SNL Amy Adams singing from Wicked
Posted: 3/9/08 at 2:15pmIt'll be funnier in re-runs after the Wicked movie inevitably gets made.

Borstalboy - I thought the same thing last night after the show. I was like "Now they'll be a dozen threads tommorrow about how awesome it would be to have Amy Adams as the 150th replacement in Wicked"
Well I was partly right, as people here are touting her for supposedly forthcoming movie.

Posted: 3/9/08 at 4:40pmAmy has a great voice, don't get me wrong, but does she have the range for Galinda? Her high notes seem good, but a little weak.

Can you think of anyone famous who would be better suited to the part? I can't.
Reese Witherspoon isn't as good of a singer as Adams, and people suggest her for the part frequently. The score would probably be transposed down if she played the role.

I thought it was ok...cute, but just ok.
As far as a Wicked movie, I hope if it gets made, they cast unknowns in some roles like they did with Hairspray. I don't think Amy has the chops for the coloratura range Galinda has...even with transposition.

Just because Reese would be worse doesn't mean Amy would be good; I like to be idealistic in my fake casting.
I'm trying to decide if Kristin Bell has a better voice or not. The problem is that I haven't heard either of them sing "hardcore" soprano stuff. Amy's high note in "True Love's Kiss" was pretty good, but IIRC Galinda has to sing pretty high, especially if they do the optional E6.

I'm certainly for getting the best person for the part possible, but, when it comes to movies of musicals, there are only so many people to choose from if we're talking about known actors.
It irritated me when everyone started suggesting Bonham Carter for every potential musical role. At least Adams has a pretty decent voice. She has something to work with.
I forgot about Kristen Bell. It's possible that she might have a stronger voice than Adams. Wasn't she in A Little Night Music in L.A.?

Thank you, JoeKv99. I'm so glad someone else doesn't think Kristen Wiig is God's gift to SNL. I think she's one-note, like you said, and her one-note characters are all played annoyingly over the top. She sucks out all the realism that could possibly make her characters funny. She seems more Mad TV than SNL to me. Then again, SNL definitely hasn't been up to par the last few years. Sorry for the rant. I feel better now.
That being said, I did think she sounded great. Some of their harmonies were lovely. But like others have said, it was very WTF? I kept thinking, this is cute but what's the point? I did love that the set was bathed in green lighting, though. Nice touch for those of us who knew what the heck was going on.
