Between SITPWG, Gypsy and South Pacific, I think it is the best of the year - South Pacific that is.
SITPWG is a brilliant show that I love dearly, but the SP direction by Sher lifts it higher in comparison in terms of overall production.
Thoughts?
I haven't seen the current revivals of Gypsy or SITPWG, but I agree that South Pacific is brilliant.
My guess is that SOUTH PACIFIC will win Best Revival and Best Director of a Musical.
I agree with BustopherPhantom, I truly believe South Pacific will win best revival.
I think, however, that Gypsy's 3 leads will win acting awards in their respective categories.
Sunday may win for Daniel Evans or some technical awards.
I think it's safe to say, the vast majority of this season's awards belong to the revivals!

You are right, sir.
I don't think Boyd Gaines has much of a "win" chance; he'll be nominated, but he doesn't seem to have as much buzz as Benanti and LuPone, and because Stew is the only Leading Actor in PASSING STRANGE, Daniel Breaker has now become the frontrunner in Featured Actor.
In terms of Revivals, I think wins will be spread out as follows:
SOUTH PACIFIC
Best Revival of a Musical
Best Director of a Musical (Bartlett Sher)
SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE
Best Leading Actor in a Musical (Daniel Evans)
Best Set Design of a Musical
GYPSY
Best Leading Actress in a Musical (Patti LuPone)
Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Laura Benanti)
So what were we talking about?
Oh right. SOUTH PACIFIC is all kinds of awesome. No question.
I would hope SUNDAY wins Best Set Design, at the very least.
So here's a few "monkeys" in the wrench:
Best Actress: Kelli O'Hara
Featured Actres: Loreta Ables Sayre
Featured Actor: Danny Bernstein
Set, Lighting and Costumes: SOUTH PACIFIC
that other revival has enemies in the TONY House.
It could happen.
If South Pacific doesn't win set and lighting, the voters will have lost their minds.
I think your thread title could use a (?). They are all the rage this season.
I haven't seen the current revivals of Gypsy or SITPWG

*rolls eyes*
Ha ha, good catch Foster.
I think Max Crumm and Laura Osnes have a lock on winning in their respective acting categories this year. Seriously how could WINNERS of a reality show not be the best performers on Broadway?
I know sarcasm doesn’t always read as such, so just to avoid any confusion I want to clarify I’m being sarcastic.
I know amazing sets and lighting when I see them. I don't need to see the other shows to know it deserved to win. As long as it wins those two, I'll be happy.
Elphaba - the SITPWG set is a shoein to win Best Set. the projection work is absolutely amazing.
Barker - loved the reference there! both of those (?) threads have now been deleted. Too funny.
Well, I've seen many amazing Scenic Designs, but I'm sure there are a few Tony voters who realize that the award doesn't just go to the show with a pretty Scenic Design. The award should go to the show who's Scenic Design is most effective for the piece. So without seeing the other shows, it'd be hard to tell which design is the most effective. From what I've seen, SITPWG's Scenic Design is extremely effective, but since I haven't seen the other two I can't say Gypsy or South Pacific's is more effective.
sondheimgeek... you could argue that the SUNDAY scenery and set are the entire musical. I mean -- I'm not sure how much more interactive you can get
Oh, I agree. I just don't think without seeing the other shows Scenic Designs, that I could say SITPWG's is the most effective.

What a smart comment, I loved it.
Just shut up and let me have my opinion. I should change my username so people will actually take me seriously.

Elphaba3 , you've convinced me to see the show twice when I'm in NY later this year.
Elphaba3- I'm taking you seriously, I just mean that it may be a little unfair to judge without seeing how the other shows used their designs.
An opinion based on what?
You have no comparisons.
You say that SOUTH PACIFIC is the best out of those three, but you've NEVER even seen the other two!!
At least if I am going to bash or criticize something, I cover all avenues of alternate perspective and comparisons first.
Shutting up now.
From what I've heard about Gypsy, it has basically no sets. If I were to see SITPWG, I might change my mind because people have said the sets and lighting are fabulous.

Lol. No one has said GYPSY doesn't have sets. It certainly has sets. People have just said the sets look cheap. They do, but it fits with the vaudeville theme.

Why does it need a ?. The Tony's are a moth and a half away. If it was Tony night, then I'd but a ?. South Pacific is a lock to win. Too many people are pissed about Sunday's tiny orchestra and lack of magic it had in London and Gypsy is more about the performances than the production. That said, I'm not a fan of the new South Pacific and find much of it a bit off from where it should be.
And since when are sets a factor in revival? Company won last year with basically no sets. I'd also argue that Pajama Games sets weren't that great either. Nothing to do with it winning.
