Posted: 3/17/05 at 7:01pmWhy is this question asked every time a new show opens?

Posted: 3/17/05 at 7:02pmPab, you just ignored my questions...I'm confused.

I know I've answered it AT LEAST 10 times before. Somebody else's turn.

Posted: 3/17/05 at 7:05pmFine. Critics see the show and review it the week of opening night, typically the night or 2 before so they have time to think about it and write their review on time for opening night. Opening night is just a night for people incolved with the show, and their families and friends. The reviews are already out usually, as the opening curtain rises.

Posted: 3/17/05 at 7:05pmMunk, you cleared it up. I was just not sure exactly in which direction you were leaning and I now know.

I'm new here so I'll take the burden and answer the question.
The days of Clive Barnes rushing from the theatre to his office on opening night to crank out a review for the morning press are over. Reviewers are invited to press performances the week before actual opening night.
Thus the reviews are largely written and often posted (especially online versions) before the curtain even rises for the opening night performance. Thus the thrill of a big Broadway opening loses some of its luster (especially if you realize you are in a critical turkey before the curtain even rises) but thems the times we live in.

Posted: 3/17/05 at 7:12pmTalkin Broadway review more like what I felt, and I am glad that brought up the "Las Vegas" skit... BORRRRINNNNGGGG !!!

Posted: 3/17/05 at 7:12pmWell, apparently, not everyone is as *enchanted* with Ramirez, a.k.a., the Lady of The Lake, as we might have thought would be. I champion her, but she always seems to actually *look* like she's working really hard. And she is a very imposing woman, not everyones cup of tea.

Personally, I think Ramirez is extremely talented ! Great voice, and seems to be very naturally funny. Problem that I have is that he role in "Spam" in not prevalent enough to get raves for her performance.
Just my .02

Posted: 3/17/05 at 7:19pm"Working hard and showing it" was one of Ben Brantley's chief complaints of Sutton Foster in LITTLE WOMEN -- it will be interesting to see how he comments on Ramirez's performance.

Posted: 3/17/05 at 7:19pmI'm just glad I'm not the only one who disliked the show. I felt like I was the only person not laughing!

Posted: 3/17/05 at 7:19pmJohn Simon will probably like her because she has big tits.

It will be interesting to see what the *real* world thinks about her. *We* know her and want to see her do well, but if I were average Joe ticket buyer/Monty Python fanatic, the last thing on my mind would be Ramirez. That's my 2 cents.
And another thought, I think I would be downright irate if I walked away from that show with that cast of movie and T.V. stars and the one person I felt "stood out" was Ramirez. I'd feel cheated and would hope the men would feel ashamed.

Posted: 3/17/05 at 7:23pmTrue -- but its important to watch how the press regard Ramirez because she (up until now) has been a prime contender for the Best Supporting Actress Tony. Today's reviews could make or break that.

I think Sara Ramirez believed her own hype and lost the ability to be funny.
This is going to be an interesting evening.

Posted: 3/17/05 at 7:24pmAbout Sara Ramirez, sure she was great and has a great voice! But whats all the hype about? I can think of quite a few actresses that could do the part justice.. Shoshana Bean and Orpheh come to mind. Tony nominee worthy, but not a win if it were up to me!

Posted: 3/17/05 at 7:27pmSomeone brought up an interesting point on the ATC boards... Given these reviews (look to be basically mixed), wonder if "DRS" would have gotten better reviews than "Spam" had it opened AFTER "Spam"???

Posted: 3/17/05 at 7:28pmI have said, without even having seen the show, that Orfeh would have been an inspired choice. It would have, at the very least, been a better sight gag. It's always a freakish and unexpected thing to hear a big voice come out of such a tiny thing. Ramirez, *should* have a big voice, she's a big beauty.
#46re: Newsday Spamalot Review Up!
Posted: 3/17/05 at 7:31pmYes! Sara's voice was much tinier than I had expected. I was hoping for big belting. Oh well.
#47re: Newsday Spamalot Review Up!
Posted: 3/17/05 at 7:35pmThat's surprising. Her voice has always been great when I've seen her perform, but again, nothing "unexpected". Maybe she's fatigued.

Posted: 3/17/05 at 7:39pmI don't think order of shows opening have anything to do with what reviews they'll get. After a very dismal season with THE FROGS, DRACULA, BROOKLYN, GOOD VIBRATIONS, and LITTLE WOMEN, you'd have thought DRS would be a huge sigh of relief.

The problem with having Shoshana in the role is well...she's not the funniest in the biz. And Orfeh's size would have been a sight gag, I agree, but that's a joke on top of a joke and wouldn't work.
Sara is perfect for the role, I don't think it's a question of being miscast. I also think that it's not at all about her believing her own hype, she's one of the most humble young leading ladies we've got-truly. I think she deserves all the praise she gets...I also TRULY hope more reviewers recognize Christian Borle-in my opinion, he runs away with every scene he's in.
