How can Spiderman sing when he's in costume?
I hope they won't do a spoof of the cartoon jingle "Spiderman, spiderman, friendly neighbor...." or something like that.
The funny thing is, the theme from that cartoon show would always get stuck in my head every time I heard 'Spiderman' but ever since the movie, I hear it with the Asian woman's voice who sings it on the street in the movie. "A-spider-a-man, Spider-a-man, a-does whatever a spider-a can..." Damn. Now, I'm going to be humming that until I can turn my iPod back on at lunch.
Is spiderman the musical really necessary?
Are any musicals really necessary? What is WITH bursting into song and chroeographed dance routines anyway?!
"If Superman and Batmna have taught us anything, it should be that."
"Bull****. Superman got good reveiws, and Batman never even happened."
Superman got SOME good reviews it also got some negative , and the show was a financial disaster so it obviously did not work.
And the made for tv version of Its a Bird... Its a Plane... Its Superman was a ratings disaster and seen as embarrassing
You're judging by made-for-TV versions? Does that means 'Once Upon A Mattress' is one of the WORST SHOWS EVER? 'Cos it's certainly not one of the greatest made-for-TV movies ever.
Many shows get a mix of positive and negative reviews. Also, many shows flop financially in spite of being actually rather good; https://forum.broadwayworld.com/readmessage.cfm?thread=932563 covers more than a few.
Whatever happened to "don't knock it until you've tried it"?

What songanddanceman2 said. "It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's Superman" may have gotten a few decent reviews, but it didn't work for the public at large and has pretty much slipped into obscurity save for the hard core Broadway community. Again, there's obviously a reason why it didn't catch on. And I'm not necessarily saying that if the public doesn't like it, it must suck, but because it's been essentially intouched save for the TV version.
The fact that Batman never got off the ground is also my point. Despite whatever troubles they were having, it was essentially scrapped. Whether the problems were with rights or music or just lack of interest, we don't have it. I would argue it's all for the better, but that's just me.
I know I will probably get some nasty comments for this, but really, as if superheroes weren't gay enough...
(and before you make a nasty rebuttal, know that I'm gay and volunteer for several LGBT organizations. Save it, please)
And yes, I wonder how the hell I'm supposed to keep my interest when I can't even see the main character's face half the time. I know there's a very famous masked character on Broadway, but at least we can see half his face all the time instead of his whole face half the time.
The idea sounds unbelievably silly to me, but the execution could be fantastic ! We'll just have to wait and see ! One thing is sure, this is either going to be a massive hit or a colossal disaster, no middle ground here !

Is Bono still involved in this?
I get why people are doing facepalms already about this, but I mean they have made other seemingly over the top cheesy musicals in the past. I say don't knock it until there's a reason
Julie Taymor, Bono and the Edge, How can it get wrong? At the very least it will have a great score!
It just better get recorded, you hear me?
As much as this musical idea seems kinda silly (like
..Shrek), I kinda really want Barrett Foa to be Peter Parker.
I wonder how they are going to handle the Green Goblin.
Since they are looking for someone in their fifties.
I wonder if this show might have stunt doubles?

Now I'm confused. Did I wander, like, into meta-sarcasm or something? Or did you not detect sarcasm? Because if you can't, this website may not be for you...
This reminds me of a similar conversation we once all had...
"Phil Collins, David Henry Hwang, Disney? What can go wrong!"
"So i have a question for you.. if you believe that WHY ARE YOU ON THIS WEBSITE!? honestly if you don't like musicals this website may not be for you "
I think it was fairly obvious that Weez is being sarcastic because everyone's being prematurely judgemental.
Even if this show sucks it will be amazing. Who doesn't want to see The Green Goblin ONSTAGE? Deep down, underneath all of the pretention, you all want to see some guy on a glider in a crazy-ass costume flying around a theater. ADMIT IT.

I'm sorry, I keep forgetting Americans aren't very good at sarcasm. And I get REALLY snarky when people dismiss an entire production out of hand just because the first couple of articles (not even songs or casting rumours) don't appeal to 'em. ^_^
Just to make it clear to anyone else who's feeling a little slow today: I LIKE MUSICALS. VERY MUCH. Yeesh.

The biggest turn off for me here is Bono and the Edge writing the score. Somehow I just don't see such a composing team and Spider-Man being a perfect match...
What happened to people writing ORGINAL SHOWS with ORIGINAL CONCEPTS. Seriously, I know this has been discussed all over the place, but everything is a revival or based on a movie these days...
lol i stole this off of slashdot
... first peak at the spiderman musical :) ---

And everything was based on a play or a book in those days. Unoriginal source material is nothing new, so there's no reason to get so up in arms about it! Sure, copies of films (but sometimes with more songs added in) are fairly boring compared with a complete reimagining of the source work, but if a show is good, it doesn't really matter where it came from.
Besides, it really looks like this show is going to be based on the comics rather than any of the movies, so perhaps we could give the "OMG not ANOTHER movie musical!!111!!11111!!!!!" a rest...?

BDrischBDemented I get your points but comparisons to Superman especially I think miss a point--superheros are viewed VERY differently than they were in the 60s (when the most successful take on them was the Batman campy one int erms of what adults would watch--something Superman played into as well). I think audiences now would and could react very differently to the idea of a superhero musical than they did back then--and such a musical would also be written very differently
Weez good point--while I do think musicals seem to be getting more nad more unoriginal and the opnes based on movies are closer and closer to those movies--musical theatre is NOT a medium with a big history of "original concepts" instead of adaptations and I would say that hasn't changed any since the days of Rodgers and Hammerstein

If the original It's a Bird had been done after the Donner Superman it likewise prob woulda been less campy
