re: SPRING AWAKENING RUN -- why so short for a Best Musical?

"Just wondering...What other musical has won as many TONYs as SA -- 8 including Best Musical -- and run so few performances?"

Well, first of all, Spring Awakening did not have that short of a run. It had a pretty healthy run.

Second, just because something wins tons of awards doesn't mean it'll run for a long time.

^I'm pretty sure that The Will Rogers Follies ran for a pretty short time as well. Maybe not this short, but short. Also, I don't think this show was meant for this big of a theatre, like maybe it would have done better if it was in a smaller theatre, like the Walter Kerr.

There is only about 150 seat difference between the Walter Kerr and the Eugene O'Neill. I dare say that would have hardly made a difference.

The show is closing due to tough economic times. It has nothing to do with the talent of the current cast not "being up to par." The current cast is very talented.

I'll just throw this out there - I think the economic problems asides (and that is a huge issue) I'm not sure we are going to see as many shows opening and running for a decade as during the 80s and 90s. For one thing, partly because Off Broadway has all but disappeared, Broadway itself is saturated. Every theatre is booked pretty much all the time (compare that statistic to when say RENT or PHANTOM opened - lots of Broadway houses sat empty for years on end) and there is just more competition.

I'd compare it more to how Broadway was in the 20s-60s. Even huge hit productions only ran 4-5.

SPRING AWAKENING is a hit. Its run is only short when compared to musicals that largely opened at a time when trends were different.

Sondhead, the show has made musical theatre history. For one, it won 8 Tony Awards, a near sweep. What was the last musical to do that? It certainly wasn't a small show with no celebrities like this. It's a daring musical featuring mostly 16-22 year olds with a score that is the first of its kind. It fuses period piece with contemporary music and language. Also, it's a gloomy piece with controversial subject matter involving children that actually drew a crowd and had a respectable run on Broadway. Spring Awakening has certainly left a mark in Broadway history. It's one of a kind.

Nicely put, Steven.

Of course, the previous show to win more Tonys was "The Producers." Before that? Without checking, my memory tells me it's "Les Miserables," also with eight.

And, as someone pointed out earlier, "Sweeney Todd" also won eight Tonys, but ran a little more than half as long as "Spring Awakening." In the big picture, THAT is a remarkably shocking statistic.

A run of 900 performances is, as I said above, a very good run. The show will make its mark in Broadway history along with many other shows that are well remembered today long after they closed with less than 900 performances.

Well, you have to remember that SWEENEY was also playing the Uris (now the Gershwin) one of the biggest houses on Broadway. Had it played at the Booth or the Shubert, it probably would have had a somewhat longer run.

It's had a long, healthy, and profitable run. The show has done quite well.

And as others have said, the Best Musical award doesn't necessarily make for a many-year run. Look at all the Best Musical winners that closed in about as many performances as "Spring Awakening" or less. Also, some non-winners go on running and running; "Wicked" did not win Best Musical and it still goes on.

Awards can definitely spur ticket sales and boost productions, but in the end, those awards can only do so much. It's simply whether or not people want to keep paying to see the show that defines how long it runs.

And it did have a good and successful run off-Broadway during the previous summer and fall, right? Wonder what the total number of combined Manhattan performances is?

We'll make ourselves feel better about this yet!

Spring Awakening closing has no effect on the source material or the cast. The cast is talented, though in certain ways not as good as the OBC (or even tour), and the material is very good. It may not be every cup of tea, but it has a niche on Broadway that makes it successful.

The state of the economy is the reason it is closing. Not because it isn't as good as other Tony award winners or because the cast isn't as good as the OBC.

Musicals that were released a decade or two ago were riding on the country's economic high and had the option to stay open for a quite good length of time. But the natural cycles of the economy mean we hit a downward slope at some point and now, as you can see with all the closings, is that time.

It has nothing to do with the material. I would also guess that long running shows like RENT and Hairspray, if released two years ago, would be calling it quits around now too. It's just the natural state of the cyclical, unfortunate and uncontrollable economy.

On a slightly related note, I have a question regarding SA closing. Has the final cast been announced yet or is it just assumed that the current players will stay on through January? I mainly want to know because though I am planning a trip in February, I would like to see Spring Awakening one last time. I've seen it twice, once in the audience (it was the first show I went to where you could drink in the audience - ah, what fun) and last time on-stage which kicked some serious booty. However, since I saw it with most of the current players when I last saw it (except Parrish if he is still on as Melchior) I don't feel quite as much need, but would like to know what the cast will be. Thank you! :)

As a Spring Awakening fan, I really have no complaints about the run. The cast (IMO) remained strong, it recouped and made profit, it will leave memories of 900 performances, people LOVED the show (I don't care what anyone here says), so how can I complain?

To the mormon -

I would be very surprised if any of the current cast left. The three leads are contracted until closing night, so they will finish out the show. And the rest of the supporting characters can leave at any time, though I don't know why they would - so I would bet on them being there.

The cast that is there right now = closing cast.
