So what are the new lyrics to Purple Summer?
Matt,I credit The Guilty Ones.org.
Listen to what’s in the heart of a child
A song so big in one so small
Soon you will hear where beauty lies
You’ll hear and you’ll recall
The sadness, the doubt, all the loss, the grief
Will belong to some play from the past
As the child leads the way to a dream of belief
A time of hope through the land…
A summer’s day…
A mother sings
A song of purple summer
Through the heart of everything
And heaven waits…
So close it seems
To show her child the wonders
Of a world beyond her dreams
The earth will wave with corn
The day so wide, so warm
And mares will neigh with
Stallions that they mate, foals they’ve borne
And all shall know the wonder
Of Purple Summer…
And so I wait…
The swallow brings
A song of what’s to follow
The glory of the spring
The fences sway
The porches swing
The clouds begin to thunder
Crickets wander murmuring…
The earth with wave with corn
The day so wide, so warm
And mares will neigh with
Stallions that they mate, foals they’ve borne
And all shall know the wonder
I will sing the song of Purple Summer
All shall know the wonder
I will sing the song of Purple Summer
All shall know the wonder
I will sing the song of Purple Summer…

i think the only song that REALLY is not done justice on the cast recording is "Mama Who Bore Me (Reprise)" as others have said. it really is more of a rock song live, but it sounds like a folk song or something on the recording. and they didnt include all the cool drum beats on the cd!
and id love to hear another recording of "Purple Summer" with new lyrics
so yeah, id love there to be a live recording someday (minus all the dialogue throughout the songs if possible). but it wouldnt happen for awhile, so im just fine with the regular cd now.
Mama Who Bore Me and its reprise annoy me the most.
I HATE the violin thing at the beginning, and I miss the three bumps before the reprise.
I would love a live recording, someday.
As much as I like the show, I just can't stand the recording.
Also, Lea's performance live is much more beltier than she is on the CD...I mean she practically whispers most of her stuff. No clue why.
Agreed. I have some issues with the recording...Or maybe it's just how the show is sung: in songs like "Blue Wind" and "Mama Who Bore Me" every single note isn't straight, if you know what I mean -- it has a scoop, or a riff (or something) while the guys seem to sing mots of their notes straight, with little to no vibrato.
Maybe I'm just picky.
misschung....The music rocks live. I saw it at the Atlantic and my friend and I were pretty blown away. I chose most of the shows that we saw lasy year and I remember reading about Spring Awakening and for some reason, out of the potential off Broadway shows that we were going to see (We saw 3) Spring Awakenings logo peaked my interest. So glad I got the tickets. And really glad we saw it in a smaller venue. What a great evening.

thanks - I think I'm going to get a ticket in a week or so, because I liked the music but you can tell it has the potential to be much more powerful live. Not to mention the visual attraction :o)
This cast is absolutley amazing live! The OBCR is good but it certainly does not do justice to the live show. A live recording would be great, I hope they do it.

We're going to see the show in August, but someone bought us the cast recording today. Will it ruin the show if we listen to it first? We listened to Ave Q before seeing it and wish we would have waited.... Just curious to read your opinions. Thanks!
The songs don't really give insight into the plot so I don't think it would ruin the show if you listened to the Cast Recording beforehand.

Recording the show live would not help. In fact it makes things worse, the sound is not as good and the audience can be intrusive. Also the movement on stage would create unwanted noise and interference.
Live recording can work for conncert stagings (like SOUTH PACIFIC) where the performers stand and sing into the mics. But for a fully staged show its a disaster.
As for SPRING, we'll probably have to wait for a foreign production to get another cast album.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
