re: STORY OF MY LIFE Will Likely Be Ineligible For Tony Nominations

The Tony Committee is too small. It isn't working. These rules are just archaic and rules are made to be broken if the system is unfair. The Tony Awards should return to its' roots and the categories need to be expanded. I think their needs to be an Ensemble Award. They used have an award for conductors. Maybe they still have this category, I don't know for sure. Musical Directors should be nominated also. I think the the Tony Awards need to move back to Broadway. I know Radio City is large and can give more people a chance to attend the ceremony but I have always thought it the wrong venue for Broadway.

The only way rules are unfair is if they don't apply to all shows. THEY DO.

Sure...USHERS should help determine Tony noms. THUD. That would be fair...because who among them wouldn't just nominate the shows they are working to help perserve their jobs?

Ensemble award....um....isn't that really just Best Musical or Play....THAT rewards everyone...which MAKES them the ultimate ensemble.

If the Tony Nom folks don't have the opportunity to see a show it cannot be eligible. Period.

Are you schilling for The Broadway League DRAMAMAMA? It sure sounds like it. The Tony Awards need to include the wider theatre community. Ensemble awards for many plays are quite needed. DRAMAMAMA sounds like the epitome of the elitist. Not attractive and out of touch with the reality of the times. Get with the program dear. So far, just about every thread you have posted is out of touch and condescending. You may think you are infallible but you need to come down from your throne and open your closed mind. You are unimpressive and a bit of a bore the way you condemn the valid opinions of others who happen to like a play or musical that you have ruled as objectionable because it did not suit your impeccable credentials as the all knowing DRAMA MAMA.

Actually, the Olivier Awards added a new category this year, Best Company Performance. I think it's a pretty good idea. There are some original casts that come along that are just blessed from above and coalesce into a finely honed ensemble. I'm thinking of the original casts of A Chorus Line, Ain't Misbehavin', Dreamgirls, Nicholas Nickleby, Glengarry Glen Ross, Rent, Urinetown, August: Osage County, etc.

Musical director would be more difficult - I'm not sure the voters would necessarily understand what constitutes fine musical direction. They would just end up giving it to whatever show wins Best Musical, as they generally do with Best Orchestrations.

>The Broadway League doesn't run the Tonys, buddy.<

The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing co-produce the Tony Awards through their joint venture, Tony Awards Productions.

What plays have I ever called OBJECTIONABLE? I am allowed to dislike any play or production I chose....just as you are allowed to like EVERY show even before it opens. I think EVERYONE is entitled to their own opinion and has every right to express it. At least I don't attack individuals (except for CoolKid because that goes without saying!).

OUT OF TOUCH? What have I said that is out of touch...and just disagreeing with you is not out of touch.

Why does it NEED to "include the wider theatre community" so that YOU can vote? And why are any awards NEEDED????

Infallible? This is a freaking DISCUSSION board. How can I even TRY to be infallible? To actually have a DISCUSSION there need to be varying points of view. If not, this would be a Mutual Admiration Society Board.

And PiraguaGuy....I've been biting my tongue to make similar comments....so thank you.

I do wonder about a Company/Ensemble Award for the Tonys. To use the SAG Awards as an example, you'll notice everyone in that cast now lists themselves as a "SAG Award winner" - which will mean that everyone who wins that award will then be able to list themselves as a "Tony Award winner", and not necessarily have to qualify it in their bios.

But back to Story of Life. I really do hope all the Tony voters got to see the show, because it should definitely have made it to nominee pool.

Interesting Actor7, I don't remember this same outrage about the rules when it applied to shows you weren't a blatant shill for.

Even if they changed the rules, it wouldn't apply until next season and Story of My Life still wouldn't be eligible.

Mr. Roxy how would that be possible? You cannot require the nominating committe to go to every opening night.

Additionally, how can something be nominated that has NO chance of winning since it wouldn't be able to be seen by the voting members?

I agree there are no 100% fail proof ways to ensure that the "right" folks are nominated. For all the beauty of live theater, here's a downfall of it.

Certainly, that's true. But aren't there specific "invited" performances for the nominating committee? Isn't that part of the "rules"?

Which brings us back to: they know the rules, they need to deal with it. (I'm a stickler for rules....don't know why!)

CRYBABY was a disgrace to the Tony noms....but that's what happens because they choose not leave any field unfilled.

Yes, and I believe they are required to have a certain number of invited performances for them to be eligible.

re: STORY OF MY LIFE Will Likely Be Ineligible For Tony Nominations

Based on a conversation I had tonight with someone involved with SOML they did not have enough invited performances to be eligible. He said if they had ran another week they would have been eligible, so I would say they did not have enough invited performances.
