I really liked the Sweet Charity movie,
and I thought it made the transfer from
stage to screen reallly well.

I, on the other hand, did not like the Sweet Charity movie. I did not like the use of photographs in the movie, and the stop motion was annoying as well. I am sure it was considered great when it opened, however, the use of those two methods in the movie really gives it a dated appearance when viewing it now.
However, I really enjoyed the whole Pompei Club dance sequence. Some of the best Fosse choreography on film.

yeah, i heard the movie cd and she sounded pretty bad, but how is "theres gotta be something better than this?"- that is my fave song in the show!!!! and what is the ending? does oscar like say "no way am i marrying you" and charity is left tragically sad?
thanks guys! i think ill get this movie (before the show closes if it does in the next few weeks cuz christina has to leave
)

Posted: 12/7/05 at 6:43pmIf you want to see what the dancing in this show is SUPPOSED to look like, get this movie. Fosse's choreography in "Big Spender," "Rich Man's Frug" and "There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This" is some of the greatest ever captured on film. Maclaine is fine (good acting and dancing, so-so-singing), especially when paired with Chita Rivera and Paula Kelly. Ignore the dialogue scenes which are straight soap opera and fast forward to the musical sequences which are all brilliant.

Well, in the version I saw on TCM, Oscar does tell Charity he can't "get all the other men" out of his mind, and leaves her at the marriage offices. She ends up on a park bench and some hippies come by with daisies, saying "Good Morning" and hand her one. She cheers up and skips away as the 'and she lived hopefully ever after" comes up on the screen.
Didn't like that ending, didn't like the fairy godmother idea ending either. But then, the current revival's ending is just ok as well. It's always going to be problematic.
As Charity is NOT a singing role, I didn't really care how Maclaine sounded. I thought she was just fine as Charity acting and dancing wise.

sorry, one more question: how does it end in the revival? i know the "bravest individual-reprise" on the revival cd just makes it sound like she was dumped, but what does really happen?
and thanks guys sooooo much! :)

Well, she's on her own after Oscar dumps her because of her past...but she's not down and out...she's hopeful and kind of "her own woman" who doesn't need a man to feel good about herself.
I know, it's kinda lame...but so were the other endings!
re: SWEET CHARITY Movie#9
Posted: 12/7/05 at 6:52pmGet it. It, unlinke the Charity revival, has superb choreography by the man who created this show. I adore this film from start to finish. Some people have issues with it, but few can deny the dances are some of the best on film, and a great documentation of the original production.

Did you really like the ending in the film? I just can't buy ANY of the endings that they have come up with.
I totally agree with you about the Fosse dances in this movie..not to be missed if you want a great record of the dances Fosse created.

to me, i think the hippie ending sounds best- the revival one seems too boring, and the fairy godmother...no clue!
well, i will save up my points online, and get this
thanks for the advise, and comments! i have to go do bio and french now, but you can keep talking if yall want! bye now! :)

Posted: 12/7/05 at 7:07pmThat movie made me hate Sweet Charity. I saw it before I saw the stage version and was convinced I would hate the stage version because I thought the movie was so horrible. I didn't enjoy anything about it.

GREAT movie.
It's FOSSE, how could anyone hate it?
Shirley was great. John McMartin reprising his Tony nominated role was great.
Also it has one of Chita's very rare film roles!

The DVD I rented recently had an alternate ending as an extra where Oscar finds Charity in the park and it all ends "happy" with them together.
As far as film adaptations of B-way musicals, this one's good. Sure, the freeze-frame is horribly dates and cheesy, but Shirley's great and the dancing is as well. I actually love the way they were able to expand numbers such as "I'm A Brass Band," which just keeps growing and growing...
re: SWEET CHARITY Movie#18
Posted: 12/7/05 at 8:32pmRegrettfully, a few good numbers were cut as is the case with many movie musicals
re: SWEET CHARITY Movie#19
Posted: 12/7/05 at 8:41pmTwo of the shows best numbers were cut. "I'm The Bravest Individual" and "Baby, Dream Your Dream." It was a mistake cutting these numbers. ITBI was replaced with a less than stellar song.
re: SWEET CHARITY Movie#20
Posted: 12/7/05 at 8:43pmToo Many Tomrrows omission was also a mistake

I have always felt that this film was vastly underrated. Shirley MacLaine gives one of her best performances as Charity (and that's saying a lot, considering the quality and scope of her work). She can break your heart as Charity Hope Valentine. She has all the right qualities: Vulnerability, toughness, humor, naïveté, and she can sing (well enough) and dance (very well). And she was a big star at the time (… and still is).
In addition, this was Fosse's debut as a film director. I really love that he tried some now-dated cinematic techniques, like the still frame “holds” and “pans,” and running the camera backwards, etc. They will catch you off-guard, and probably make you giggle a bit, but I love them just the same. They are as much a part of this film era as the high hair and '60s eyelashes.
Also, they have John McMartin (from the OBC) recreating his role (wearing way too much makeup, I might add). Sammy Davis, Jr. is a groovy amazement as Big Daddy on “The Rhythm of Life.” Not to be missed. This movie WORKS more often than it doesn't, and is well worth your time.
If you check out the DVD, you'll also be treated to an alternate ending that changes everything.

wow, you guys are making me too excited!!!! :) at least i have a movie trailer for it to keep me entertained till then...
and if we could just turn this into a sweet charity love/comment/discussion thread, i was wondering when do they sing "theres gotta be..." like in a dressing room, or something? and does charity have a tattoo really in the movie, or is it just for the movie cover?
and are there any charity links with video clips, or a synopsis, or anything?
thanks, and sorry, i have been holding in my CHARITYisms till now, and just had to burst out with all that stuff! :)
and btw, great reviews!!!! :)
