Holy Crap and I thought Audra's new album was the best news this week...

I am so there! I missed Bernarda...there is no way that I'm missing this

I've really enjoyed her work since I first saw her in CAROUSEL. Her Julie Jordan was just SO real. She was just fabulous. I think she is a highly underrated performer.
A two-piano production -- interesting. I may have to look into this!
I adore Sally Murphy and I'm sure that she'll do swimmingly in the role, but isn't she a bit old by now?
Ooooh... sounds smashing.
maybe they're doing a new look at the story. It always seemed to me that she plays youthful. How old was Armelia supposed to be?
She was great in Fiddler and even better in the more recent Bernarda Alba.
I think if she can pull off Tzeitl, she can pull off Eliza. However, I never SAW her Tzeitl. Ooh! This is an old favorite of mine and my family and I see a nice amount of Signature shows BUT I'll be at school. grr.

The lines in Fiddler say Tzeitel is 19. Sally was 41 when she got the part. She will be 43 in October.
damn really? she looks so youthful IMO not like little girl youthful but I would have begged her for early thirties...oh well...who cares?? That voice!
Not how old she IS, but how old she can PLAY. Kerry Butler will probably be able to pass for 20 when she's 50. That's what's important. Even if she couldn't pull of Tzeitl, I think Eliza could be anywhere up to 26ish.
I'm rather surprised that Signature is doing it with 2 pianos. In the past their choice to employ rather large orchestras (for such a small space) led me to admire their apparent respect for musicals. I'll pass on the production with hopes that this doesn't set a new trend for them.
I think 2 pianos could work very well and am excited to see what a "small" version of the show is like.

At least they are using a cast of 13 - the trend lately has been top do MY FAIR LADY with two pianos and a cast of ten - a concept originated by Amanda Dehnert at Trinity Rep, stolen by Gary Griffin, and in turn stolen by dozens of other directors at regional theatres across the country.

Until the video of Bernarda's cd recording where she was out of costume and without wig, I would have sworn she was just 30. I had no actual idea of her age. She just comes off so youthful and pretty.

Things like this make me so proud of the 26-piece orchestra and huge company in the production I'll be in next week. So much fun.
Theatremania raves about Signature's My Fair Lady and Sally Murphy's portrayal of Eliza.
"Buried underneath the lavish sets and profusion of period costumes in many productions of the musical are Shaw's rich characters and their emotional conflict over class and character; by cleaning away all the surface layers, Schaeffer has allowed this diamond to sparkle in a new way...Sally Murphy is luminous as Eliza, singing with so much passion and energy that she makes some of the songs seem altogether new. Whether it's revenge in "Just You Wait" or joy in "I Could Have Danced All Night," Murphy radiates an independent spirit and fresh-faced sexual allure, creating an ICONIC Eliza for the 21st Century."

The review in today's Washington Post was pretty much right on the money. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/03/AR2006100301607.html Sally Murphy and Andrew Long were marvelous. As with most Signature shows, staging, set, supporting roles, were all terrific. Sally Murphy's age actually works well -- Eliza and Higgins are purposefuly made closer in age to minimize the creep factor.

Sally Murphy never impressed me onstage, but Mrs. Patrick Campbell was close to 50 when Shaw wrote Pygmalion for her, so maybe it doesn't matter how old she is. What matters if she can hit the notes.

Jon, I saw that Trinity rep production...it was absolutely thrilling and intimate. I'd never seen My Fair Lady staged so poignantly.
Not to threadjack, but Dehnert re-staged her production at Actors Theatre of Louisville last month. As a season subscriber, I saw the show and was very much "underwhelmed." Hope The Signature production is better, though it sounds as though it is borrowing heavily from Dehnert's model.
