I think the movie material and subject matter is VERY promising for a musical. I’m rooting for it’s success. Broadway hasn’t had a real hit musical comedy in a while.

If it comes in with good buzz out of town, gets rave reviews, and gets nominated for some major Tonys, it could have a good run. Otherwise, it could end up like Groundhog Day, Honeymoon in Vegas, or American Psycho. (Though I think “Tootsie the Musical” on paper seems like a much better idea to audiences than any of those 3.) And a strong book is going to be crucial.

But they NEED to change that clipart that they’re using for a logo ASAP!!!

Well, I think you can argue what was the selling point of “The Band’s Visit?” A 90-Min small scale musical based on a movie you never saw shone two cultures you know nothing about. And it seems to be doing well.

For me, if they can overcome the cringe worthy ness of the “ : the musical” - it could be great. I love Yazbeck, so I’ll be first in line!

Above all, I think the selling point of Band's Visit was the rave reviews & word of mouth from the Atlantic, followed by the rave reviews on Broadway. 95% of attendees probably didn't even know it was based on a movie.

Tootsie has both the luxury and the challenge of a more "beloved"/notable source material. I really hope it will be great.

Could they maybe get a boost off of Yazbek's recent Tony win instead of Santino's name?

Tootsie is the story of a straight white man. I get that maybe that lens was necessary in the early 80's to deal with the feminism and gender issues in the movie but I'm not sure it's a lens we require right now. The plot has nothing to do with LGBT issues and I think its take on women and/or feminism is going to come across dated. I trust Yazbek but I think they're going to have to tread carefully and I wonder if this will earn the goodwill of somewhat more easily palatable (at least partially) message-driven shows. Also, last time I checked, people were not feeling that great about Dustin Hoffman.

Also, as one of the 20-somethings on the board, I only watched the movie because my uncle had two VHS tapes... Tootsie and Coming to America. So I'm not sure about name recognition of the movie.

I am excited about the cast though. I want it to be good. I'm just... nervous.

I love the movie and hope the musical handles it with care. My questions about the Press Release: while I loved John Behlmann in Significant Other, isn't he a little young to be playing the role George Gaynes played in the movie?- John Von Horn, now called Max Von Horn in the musical. The role is a has been actor now getting attention again on a soap opera. Don't see Mr. Behlmann in that role. Also don't see the part of Jessica Lange's father,  Les, listed in the breakdown. Charles Durning was so wonderful in that part. I don't see how the story can play out without it. Perhaps it's not cast yet.

That character is pivotal to the story including the plot between Michael and Julie.  It definitely will be part of the musical.

Heads up that individual tickets for Chicago are on sale now. Just picked one up for 9/22 matinee!

It looks like it’s sold very well to subscribers and groups, unless some seats have been held back. I looked at every Saturday matinee, and almost the entire orchestra is already sold!

I’m planning to see the show the 21st or 22nd and was wondering if they would possibly have a rush/lottery? I know they don’t announce until closer to the show date, but I know the Cher Show had a digital lottery (which I happened to win]. Traveling up just to see the show and would like to be able to see it multiple times.
