I think its ridiculous to say that teenagers are unable to conect to material. I mean I'm not saying a 16 year old should play King Lear or Mamma Rose, but West Side Story is something young people can relate to. Kids see the issues invovled in West Side Story every day and there are some INCREDIBLY talented teenagers out there

Scottie,
The problem is, it's not a matter of "relating" to the story, it's a matter of technical skill and proficiency. One of the most misleading myths in theater is that emotional identification with the character is the most essential part of acting -- if intensity of feeling were what counted most, the greatest actors in the world would all be middle-school students! great acting is about creating the ILLUSION of absolute spontaneity and sincerity, as if your character were experiencing these events and feeling these emotions for the very first time, and creating that illusion requires technique and experience. This isn't to say that young actors can't have both, but that's what counts, not the ability to relate to the characters' situation.

She is a stunning woman who carries herself so well. That dress was ill fitting. She needs to wear things that accentuate her curves. She's got to feel self conscious about her weight gain, not that it makes her any less beautiful.
Bravo!
Plus, they'll have to dance and sing the show 8 times a week. And I can't imagine one producer who would open a Broadway show with untried teenagers who haven't been through the stress of opening a Broadway show before.
I don't know...while I like the idea of casting it with teenagers, I do agree about the technique that is needed. Sometimes lack of experience is a good thing, but with a show like this I'm not so sure. I know I couldn't do it at my age.
WEST SIDE STORY REVIVAL.. WHATT?!?!
THAT IS MY FAVORITE SHOW//MOVIE//ANYTHING EVERRRR!!!
ahhhh if there was a revival, i think i would die..eeeek i adore west side story. <3333

"Recreated" choreography of a previous Jeromes Robbin show won't happen. The producers of the most-recent revival of "Fiddler" wanted to tweak the choreography which is under the control of the Robbins estate and the custodians of the estate (which included the choreography) for the show would not allow it.
It's not really that peculiar if you think about it. Imagine someone thinking about of a revival of "My Fair Lady" and saying "We're going to change the music and lyrics a bit."
If "WSS" is brought back it's Robbins or nothing.

I think that's what's meant by 'recreated' in this case. It will be Mitchell using the Robbins' choreography.

If the choreography is completely recreated (meaning the original Jerome Robbins movement is used), does that mean that the show won't be eligible for a choreography Tony?
you all do realize that Sara was already in the show, right? She toured with it years ago with Marcy Harriell.

Here's a wiiiiiiild idea? How about BRAND NEW choreography? How about everybody stop living in the past and doing the same damn dances in every production of West Side Story ever?

An astute idea EdmundOG! Maybe they can play their own instruments, too!

The Jerome Robbins estate has declred that there will NEVER be a Broadway revival of WSS using anyone else's choreography.
Dear best12bars,
"I see her more in the title role...
...as the entire West Side."
That was a terribly, terribly bitchy thing to say.
Would you marry me?...
Well, if they cast her, her understudy would be quite happy.
Natascia Diaz for Anita. She still looks young enough to pass, and she was apparently fabulous when she did it on tour.

why are people so disgusting? sara ramirez is gorgeous and curvy, just the way anita should be...im sorry that you cant handle someone not being stick thin-get over it
I have no problem with the way Sarah looks, but does she dance???

As I responded, I completely understand the proprietory considerations of the Robbins' estate.
The Met Opera doesn't change a note of "Turandot" or "Don Carlos". Why is it more acceptable to modify a choreographer's effort. "Revelations" would not be the same entity if Alvin Ailey's choreography was changed.
Oh dear, Sara could not handle the physical aspect of the role.
<--- Michelle DeJean all the way for the role. She played it on the international tour years back. And she is absolutely fabulous. With a black/brunette wig, she also has the perfect look. And what a body, what a dancer, and she can SING!
incupsofcoffee, she was curvy and "gorgeous" when she won the Tony, she is way heavier now. It bothers me when people try to use the new trend of "you look healthy and beautiful" with people who are obviously overweight.
If she wants to be that way, that's only her business, maybe she feels better that way, but she is obviously way too heavy for the role at the moment.

Unless they made someone else dance the Gym sequence and the America choreography (much like Megan Lawrence didn't have to dance the "Steam Heat" choreography in the Pajama Game revival), Sara Ramirez is just not an option for Anita.
I've heard great things about Natascia Diaz' dancing, and I'd actually like a Hispanic in the role, I'm still a little upset that the Paul in the A Chorus Line revival is not.
She's not a name at all. She'd be fine.
