a few more thoughts I had.... on seasons of love opening the film, for those with reservations to that
it works very well...it wouldnt work if they put the song, in its whole form in the movie they do with the musical, just would stop the flow of the movie, instead they put the seasons oh love reprise, or I believe they call it seasons of love b where seasons of love falls in the show, as you can tell on the cd they have done some rearranging of numbers and the order of the movie works beautifully.... and I always figured that the musical takes place in either 1993/1994 or 1994/1995, and yes its only a few years but it makes a HUGE different. and lastly, I love that the movie has dialogue, makes it easier to follow then the all sung through stage show, but its SOOOOO weird to hear the actors speaking things you, well I am, at any rate, already used to hear them singing... quite funny to be honest

Regarding the time change, its been commented on many times before, but I think the decision was made because even though Larson began writing RENT in the early 90s, the world he describes is very much the East Village of the late 80s. The Tent cities, the squatters, the rioting -- were all gone by 1992 or so. So for "historical accuracy" the film definitely belongs in the late 80s. That said, from the clips I've seen, it appears that Columbus has created his own kind of "alterior" NYC for the film -- nothing in it even remotely resembles the East Village. The Cat Scratch Club depiction in particular is completely out of character for that neighborhood.

But that's not necessarily a bad thing. RENT is a musical afterall, and I'm sure its depiction of the EV is stylized in the same way that say MOULIN ROUGE depicts 19th century Monmartre.

How about giving us your prediction of the movie in the long run? Do you think it is the best movie or musical of the year? Any best performance nominations for the oscars (Performance at least satisfactory)? Would Johnathan Larson approve (exceeding expectations)? Did it work with the PG-13 rating? Could RENT top the recent sucess of musical such as Chicago or Moulin Rouge? And would people who arent familiar with the broadway production that will see this film jump on the RENT bandwagon?

Sorry, so many questions...you lived my dream. Can't wait until I fulfil this one too. Please grace us with everything you can tell us.

well the movie i think will do great in big cities and anywhere, where a lot of RENTheads dwell, other than that I dont know, we still live in a country thats so unaccepting of so much. i dont know about bet performance, although everyone is great its too much of an ensemble piece. I think Mr Jarson is quite happy with the results, although a little peeved they cut we're ok... lol, jk, i missed the cut songs, but it made things flow better. i dont know if rent will top chicago or moulin because like i said this country is still so unaccepting...yes i think people who dont really know the broadway show will appreciate how beautiful this work is....

anyway thats about it for now, sorry this is a mess, im so tired...lol

Thanks for the info! I had one question for you after your nap re: Saw A Screening of RENT tonight... (spoilers, maybe)

How was the Angel/Collins relationship represented? Did they spend enough time on it for the audience to feel the bond, and the ultimate depth of sorrow when Angel dies?

Is there a great big sloppy wet Collins/Angel kiss?

Isn't the premiere the 17th? And that's why there's no performance of See What I Wanna See that day?

I don't think there are understudies as of now so if the premiere is the 18th the show would have to be cancelled.

I'm pretty sure it IS the 17th - the Public specifically cancelled SWIWS that night so Idina and Aaron could go.

And you're right... there are no understudies... and that is kinda scary.

Is that whole thing with Maureen and Joanne getting engaged still in there or did they remove it?

I always thought the 89/90 year was implied when I saw the show. That's when Jonathan started writing it and it was based on his friends from the era. The various references to the clubs, tent cities, etc. also hinted at an earlier time period. I know most of the people on this board probably don't remember the 80's in New York, but it was SO incredibly different than that of the 90's and obviously the 00's.

I'm interested in an actual review of the movie, performances, etc. rather than a "and oh my god, they did this and it was amazing"-esque review.

The rent movie takes place in 1989 because that is the year Jon larson began writing the show. And as the show kept going through changes each year the date changed to reflect the year it was at that particular time. Hence the Broadway show was 1995-96. But it would make perfect sense for the movie to take place in 1989-1990. Can't wait to see the film!

What percent of the movie is dialogue, because I'm hoping for like, I dunno, 25%.

I read an early script of the movie where Mark's movies were projected on the walls of buildings. Did they retain this?

One thing that bugs about the time period change is that it makes Angel's reference to Thelma & Louise in "Today 4 U" horribly anachronistic as the film came out in '91. The time period then should've then been '91 or '92 for that to make sense (and it's still "period" enough)

they build the colins/angel relationship perfectly... i cried when he died so they did grab ur heart.... yes there is a kiss between them, a few i think... yes maureen and joanne get engaged and have a commitment ceremony, and thats where take me or leave me takes place...its a little less than 25% dialogue, its perfectly matched with the amount of music....doesnt make it seem like its a play with music...marks movies are shown all over the place in very many different areas.

What was the "vibe" like in the screening room? Did the cast laugh, cry, applaud, moooo? re: Saw A Screening of RENT tonight... (spoilers, maybe) Any "review" comments you overheard on your way out of the screening?

the energy in the room was like non other...it was a warm feeling, but TONS AND TONS of cheering and applause, after every song, character entrances, applause when the names came on the screen at the beginning, whistles, it wasnt enough to get in the way of the movie, but the energy was amazing... i was told today that all the "main characters" were at the screening except Rosario Dawson...

I don't know if this is a spoiler or not, but I'm dying to know how they handled the whole Christmas Bells sequence before Over the Moon. Since it's not on the CD, I'm guessing they got rid of it, but do they still cover that material?

Awesome! I bet Tracie was on cloud nine seeing her "dream" come true in front of her eyes! Wish I could've seen her facial expressions as she watched the movie:)
The cinematography looks to be gorgeous in the trailers and promotional pictures. Did the movie strike you as being beautiful to look at? How about the camera work and editing...hoping Chris used a "moving" camera to great effect without resorting to the quick edits like those seen in Moulin Rouge and Music Videos. Any thoughts on the technical aspects of the movie? Thanks.

Are there any songs that are on the soundtrack that didn't end up making it into the final cut of the film?

I was thinking about the same thing Broadway Girl, especially after watching the OUt TOnight video like 10 times. It appears as though, Mark projects his videos as they are all huddled on that couch. As they sing Finale B? I was wondering if that was going to be it---them singing interspersed with the "video footage"
