A film of SUNDAY would work if the stage script were substantially restructured to fit the film medium.

A studio would probably want to expand the characters/plot of the 2nd Act, which are more accesible to film audiences, and would probably streamline some of the plot lines of Act 1, making it more significantly focused on George and Dot -- but absolutely it could work. Sondheim purists might not like it, but it could make a compelling film on its own merits.

Meryl Streep as Joanne, though... wow. In the unlikely event that a Company movie is ever made, that would be orgasmic casting.

I don't think there is any other Sondheim show besides the ones that have been filmed and Follies that could be made into movies. That's just me. Maybe some wonderful person could figure out how to make Sunday in the Park... work onscreen. To me, it's too theatrical for the screen.

Also...
I really would hate to see Sondheim go mainstream. Do you really want to see pathetic 12 year olds putting YouTube videos up of themselves attempting Epiphany, Being Alive, Finishing the Hat and (God forbid!) I'm Still Here? Hopefully the film of Sweeney Todd is a success, but also hopefully it still keeps Sondheim a cult figure.

I agree with MB. A film of Sunday could work very well, and I'll add if the powers at the helm would take cinematic risks with it, it could be sensational.

Imagine a photo-realistic La Grand Jatte. Everything exactly as it was positioned in the painting, not in reality. Then... Imagine George's painting process... he could be walking around INSIDE the dots of his paintings. Moving in and around them in 3D, as he works away. If you treat the visual of his creation as abstractly as the creation itself, you could have a movie masterpiece on your hands.

...and the source material ain't too shabby to start with.

There have been filmmakers (not many) in the past who have known how to use film as a "canvas." Find one of them (no easy task)... and you could have something very special.

...and then set it against the very realistically filmed "Act II" for contrast.

Great stuff!

If Sweeney Todd does well I fear the idiots from Date & Epic Movie would make a big over-raunchy and badly written spoof of musical movies.

My cast-
Baker: Zack Braff
Cinderella: Kristen Bell
Baker's Wife: Toni Colette
Witch: Merryl Streep or Megan Mullally
Wolf: Alan Cummings
Jack: Thomas Dekker or Jonathan Groff
Jack's mother: Kathy Bates
Cinderella's stepmother: Katey Sagal
Red Riding Hood: Unknown(or possibly Amanda Bynes)
Rapunzel: Mandy Moore
Rapunzel's Prince: Richard H. Blake
Cinderella's prince: Adam Garcia

As if mainstream audiences give a tinker's squat about artist's problems or their processes.

I don't really understand people saying FOLLIES cannot work.

I mean...ALL THAT JAZZ should never have worked, and it's thrilling (problems and all...but I don't see the problems as it's my favorite film of all time).

If Fosse can pull off a song-and-dance heart attack, do we really think someone can't pull off FOLLIES?

Seemingly uncommercial movies get made all the time. A powerful director or producer can get anything greenlit for absolutely any property they want to film. While something like SITPWG might be a long shot, Assassins was optioned by HBO for Barry Levinson a decade ago, and Into the Wooods got close to production. There's nothing to suggest that they won't eventually be filmed.

If a hot director who's made a billion dollars for a studio decided he or she wanted to make SITPWG, it would get made.

Into the Woods should be a Showtime/HBO cable musical, much like how Reefer Madness was done.

If SWEENEY hits it big at the box office there will be Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovette action figures on sale at Hot Topic and Spencer Gifts.
