You got it, boys.
Well, of course, if SWEENEY is a box office hit, it will no doubt be more to the teaming of Depp-Burton in a Bloody Horror movie than Sondheim's esteemed reputation. So I doubt its going to spark interest in Sondheim's other shows. I mean they didn't rush to film ZORBA or KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN after CHICAGO won Best Picture!
Still I love your "casting" for films of SUNDAY and NIGHT MUSIC.
If Sweeney Todds a hit, I think we'll be seeing Jekyll & Hyde being put on the fast track. Not a Sondheim show, but it's another dark show that I imagine a studio would put out to try an capitalize on Sweeney Todd's success...
Both of those "woods" casts make me cringe. Except for Anne Hathaway.
I can only imagine two of his works translating well to film. Into The Woods seems the one most able to interest a large enough audience. The other would be (and many will probably disagree) Pacific Overtures. I think it's abstract enough and esoteric enough to find a place in today's non-theatre loving world. It would absolutely need to be one of those rare joining of material with the right director that Sweeney Todd seems to be enjoying. But I think the possibilities are there if someone could find the right concept to adapt it to.

"A Little Night Music, starring Emma Thompson (Desiree) and Gary Oldman (Frederik). With Cate Blanchett and Hugh Jackman as Charlotte and Carl-Magnum... and Judi Dench as Madame Armfeldt"
This would make me weep with joy - either as a movie or live.
The Witch - Catherine Zeta-Jones
Baker's Wife - Cate Blanchett
Baker - Paul Giamatti
Cinderella - Ann Hathaway
The Two Princes - Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenthaal (also as the wolf)!
Red Riding Hood's Grandmother - Angela Lansbury
Cinderella's Stepmother - Meryl Streep
The Narrator/Mysterious Man - Jack Nicholson
Jack - Zac Efron
Jack's Mother - Bette Midler
I would see it in a heartbeat even if zac efron was in it And as far as that sunday idea with ewan and rene get rid of rene and cast sombody better and id pay for them to make that movie.
"I am sorry but it is an unjust world and virtue is only triumphant in theatricle performances" The Mikado
Actually I like this cast EXCEPT for Anne Hathwaway. Since Amy Adams can sing, I think she'd make a good Cinderella! Heck she's basically already playing her:
The Witch - Catherine Zeta-Jones
Baker's Wife - Cate Blanchett
Baker - Paul Giamatti
Cinderella - Ann Hathaway
The Two Princes - Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenthaal (also as the wolf)!
Red Riding Hood's Grandmother - Angela Lansbury
Cinderella's Stepmother - Meryl Streep
The Narrator/Mysterious Man - Jack Nicholson
Jack - Zac Efron
Jack's Mother - Bette Midler
I'll add a few more then:
The Witch - Catherine Zeta-Jones
Baker's Wife - Cate Blanchett
Baker - Paul Giamatti
Cinderella - Ann Hathaway
The Two Princes - Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenthaal (also as the wolf)!
Red Riding Hood's Grandmother - Angela Lansbury
Cinderella's Stepmother - Meryl Streep
The Narrator/Mysterious Man - Jack Nicholson
Jack - Zac Efron
Jack's Mother - Bette Midler
Rapunzel - Scarlett Johansson
Stepsisters: Gwyneth Paltrow & Mira Sorvino
Giant's Wife - Kathy Bates
Little Red Riding Hood - Abigail Breslin
Cinderella's Father - Christopher Walken
I actually think Cate Blanchett would be more intersting as the Witch. And she has a great voice.

What about PASSION -- another period piece, a dramatic tale of obssession and doomed love with three strong characters -- probably the stuff that would appeal to movie audiences?
...and it has a very melodic and romantic score.
Cate B can be Fosca, Hugh J can be Giorgio, and Catherine ZJ can be Clara?

Reba as the Baker's Wife!
I don't know if anyone agrees with me, but I think Helena Bonham-Carter (if she can sing)would make an amazing Witch in Into the Woods.
I would love to see Ann Hathaway play Cinderella in INTO THE WOODS.
And PASSION would make a great artsy independent film that only three people would go see.
Into the Woods seems like the most commercial show that could make it in the Theatres. Especially after Enchanted, which I think will make a good showing next month.
All the casting sounded good. I too would favor Helena in any role that allows her to show off her great emotional range. Though Cher would do a great job too. I think Helena would bring in more of an audience in this day and age.
I would like to see Pippin with Ben Vereen. Other than that, just being able to preserve more Musicals with talented performers will always be a treat for me.
Unfortunately, the combination has to be so right and that is the most difficult part. I also agree, Hollywood, Broadway are really going too far over the top with their budgets. I love a wonderful background but it is the style not the price tag that really impresses. I know some of this doesn't come cheap but oftentimes, it is more than is necessary and brings more headaches than they are worth.
Is it bad that I'd love to see an animated "Into the Woods"?
Oh Catherine! Yum.
I would love to see Toni Collette do the following:
Dot in Sunday in the Park with George
Baker's Wife in Into the Woods
Fosca in Passion
Sara Jane Moore in Assassins
and then I'd like to see Meryl Streep as:
Joanne in Company
Phyllis in Follies
Desiree in A Little Night Music
The Witch in Into the Woods
If Into the Woods...couldn't Eric McCormack be one of the princes?
I love this thread!

Agreeee. Amy would be much more interesting in the part, I think.

The only reason SWEENEY TODD was filmed was because of its gore, strong storyline and Burton throwing his weight behind it. The other Sondheim shows don't have a snowball's chance in hell of being filmed (or in the case of ALNM and FORUM, filmed again).

Sunday wouldn't work on film. And Into the Woods second act would have a hard time on film as well.
...however, Company with Jude Law or Ewan McGreggor. Now that I could see working.
