Prior to the opening of LITP, CCBB was a shoe in for Best Scenic Design Tony for a musical. Now that LITP has opened, CCBB has become a far off second in most predictions for this award.
When I was in NYC in April I did get the chance to see CCBB and thought the sets were astounding and quite possibly the best I have ever seen.
What is so special about the designs for the LITP that may bring it the win? If anyone has any pictures of the LITP set, please post.

Piazza will take the Lighting and Scenic categories. I think it is so great how they split up the design categories...play and musical design are very different.

Piazza hands down. Chitty's set design is a bunch of bells and whistles. Piazza's design is pure art.

Piazza will win here for what are the best sets created for a Broadway show in years.
I guess if pressed I'd pick Piazza, though I really think Chitty deserves SOMETHING for the car, it is pretty spectactular, whether you're for spectacles or not.
The goddamn thing flies and the rest of the sets are astounding...CHITTY! Piazza is nice to look at yes, but LIGHTING should be the only tech Tony they win.
My predix:
LIGHTING - PIAZZA
SET - CHITTY
COSTUMES - LA CAGE
The Design Categories should all go to PIAZZA, IMO but heres who will most likely win on June 5th:
Orchestrations: The Light in the Piazza
Set Design: The Light in the Piazza
Lighting Design: The Light in the Piazza
Costume Design: La Cage aux Folles (or maybe Piazza)
Piazza's set really utilized the stage well and was of course gorgeous, however I saw both of these in one day and its hard to not let a spectacle like chitty eclipse Piazza in ones mind.
Especially since the songs in Chitty are not brilliant the story is absolutely absurd and yet I enjoyed the heck out of it, partly because of the amazingly talented cast, but largely because of the continuely dazzling effects from the car to the large ship. Chitty's set was really a big part of what carried the show for me and thats a big job to do by itself
...Although I still really hope Piazza takes best musical or at least that Kelli or Victoria get to walk out with tonys

Based on the pictures and clips I've seen, CCBB is more spectacular. But I feel that the Tony voters might go with Piazza...
As a set designer, I have faith that the voters will choose Piazza. From everything I have seen it is beautiful and simple and serves the story well.

While "Chitty"'s set is fun and nice to look at, it is only that - eye candy. With a show like CHITTY, it's hard to design sets to be anythign more than this. So although they are fun, that's it.
PIAZZA's sets deserve the award, and I hope they get it.

CCBB, definately.
The set of Piazza is the most gorgeous thing I've ever seen. Just absolutely breathtaking. It is pure art.
