'Schmigadoon!' dances away with top honors at the Chita Rivera Awards

'Schmigadoon!'' was named Outstanding Ensemble in a Broadway Show and its Christopher Gattelli won for Outstanding Choreography in a Broadway Show.

Outstanding Dancers in a Broadway Show were Max Clayton, ''Schmigadoon!''; Isabelle McCalla, ''Schmigadoon!''; and Robert ''Silk'' Mason, ''CATS.''

The Chita Rivera Awards, held last night at NYU Skirball, also presented the legendary Ann-Margret, 85, with its Lifetime Achievement Award.

Wow.  If Choreography would be announced early on at the Tony program, if Schmigadoon wins, Ragtime is taking Best Revival.  Haven’t seen Schmigadoon yet but I was floored by Cats choreo.  Hoping Cats get some love at the Tony’s besides Costume.

Worth pointing out that the Chitas awarded Arturo Lyons & Omari Wiles last year for their work on Jellicle when it was at PAC.

Kad, you're right. The Chita Rivera Awards gave a special award last year to ''CATS'' for Outstanding Off-Broadway Choreography.

But the current production on the Great White Way was still nominated for this year's Chitas for Outstanding Broadway Ensemble, Outstanding Broadway Choreography and Outstanding Dancer(s) in a Broadway Show.

To Smarter People Than Me,

Am I wrong in discounting these various awards as in any way predictive of the Tony Awards, especially when contending musicals were honored last year when they were off-Broadway?

It feels like Cats: The Jellicle Ball is going to do great at the Tony’s or it will have a disappointing showing - but I have no clue based on these other awards.

Am I wrong?

CATS was eligible for most awards last year in the undercard categories so that’s why they appear mostly like a non-entity right now. The fact they cleared 3 of their 4 Drama Desks, to me, is an indicator that they could’ve picked up more if they were eligible.

Choreography and Costume Design seemed all but locked down. It’s just going to come down to voters’ tastes and if they want to embrace a radically modern reinvention or staid concert presentation.

I don’t see a world where CATS doesn’t pick up Revival, Direction, and Featured Actor (De Shields).

Back on the topic, I am ELATED that Silk won a Dancer Award because they’ve been putting their body THROUGH it lately and the efforts are paying off

You are not wrong. These awards are all operating under different eligibility rules and voting bodies. Also: the fact is most seasons aren’t that competitive and most categories will have obvious front runners that will win awards, so the fact that a smaller awards’ wins align with the Tonys’ is not actually that predictive.
however, a show racking up wins certainly helps it stay visible and on the forefront of voters’ minds. But in a season in which there’s only a few actual competitive productions, I doubt that’s much of an issue.
