How many of the 70s/80s shows of Lloyd Webber and Les Mis discs have been remastered? Id on't really collect them but surely if Cats and the like haven't been they probably could use it...

The Sam French and Studio are the same
The OBC of La Cage aux Folles.
Could use a little more polish and glitter.
Aw, I LOVE ALW's REQUIEM. One of my all time favorite songs is his "Pie Jesu."
And I wish people would lay off of Webber. I don't really like all of Sondheim's stuff but you don't see me going ape **** over it.
Both the original London and Broadway cast recordings have been remastered and are available at Amazon. Other ALW remastered recordings are:
1. JC SUPERSTAR (the concept album, 1996 London revival)
2. SONG AND DANCE (1982 London cast with Marti Webb)
3. STARLIGHT EXPRESS (1984 London Cast)
4. ASPECTS OF LOVE (1989 London cast)
5. SUNSET BOULEVARD (1994 LA cast)
Spiderdj 82, you are absolutely right about the unnecessary ALW bashing and I concur with you.
One of the people on ALW's forum at IMDB quoted Hal Prince and Sondheim on the subject:
Hal Prince: "There is a whole snob attitude towards Andrew because he is so successful." And later on he stated that Webber is "..a darn good composer."
Sondheim also said: "I don't write shows to be successful. Nobody does. Not even Andrew Lloyd Webber...The point with Andrew is that people just happen to like what he likes."

I like Webber fine and love some of his scores (JCS, Aspects)--one of the best things I saw the SUmmer i live din London was honestly Whistle Down the Wind and I just took my cousin to the tour of Cats. But I really dislike nearly all of Requiem and I find it... I dunno kinda pompous even. Anyway the thread wasn't about what you like or not so I guess I shoudln't have said anything but--I do like a good percentage of his scores and shows though I wish he'd work with better lyricists. He'll never be comparitive to SOndheim in my book but that's all personal taste isn't it--he's certainly not in my books a hack at the level fo Wildhorn *stirs pot* lol. (for that matter I have much less interest in anything Jerry Herman--who everyone seems to love--writes which I find nauseatingly formulaic and simplistic--it's all personal choice).
HOWEVER to stir the pot further you do have a photo of LuPone in your profile--hasn't she said a bunch of anti Andy stuff as of late?
Yeah the Cats London recording i heard had pretty bad sound so I'll assume it was pre remaster. Why has JCS been remastered (and the 96 recording especially--late 90s recordings do *not* need remastering, it's a gimmic more or less--I'd say the same for Sunset) when Evita hasn't been? shame. I assume Phantom was remastered at some point too right? cuz the current release isn't the original release where everything is one long track, is it?

Sorry, I forgot. The Phantom was remastared, but before these latest recordings.
As for Patti, I really don't like the way she was treated in the whole Sunset affair and I cannot blame her for mentioning ALW in a bad context.

She has said worse things isnce then specifically comparing Sondheim (who of course she's doing a lot of now) to ALW, which frankly as much as I love her, love Sondheim and love a lot of ALW I wish she wouldn't as it just antagonizes things between fans.
E
Yep, you're right. But I personally never felt that the tension should exist in the first place. I'm not much of a Sondheim fan but I never bash him nor underestimate him or his work. Also, according to their public statements, both ALW and Sondheim respect each other, so there's no need for any made up confrotation. Plenty room for both of them.

Agreed completely--and yeah I've always been impressed with both men that they remain friendly and even jokey with each other (no Jerry Herman grumpiness)

I second La Cage Aux Folles, and add The Grand Tour and Milk and Honey.
CABARET-Movie Soundtrack
It's so refreshing to see people discussing ALW and Sondheim with out bashing either while being respectful of each other's opinion. Thanks to you both for that.
Oh yes...and I agree about the Cabaret Soundtrack, it's dreadful. Yet I still can't live without it. Liza rules my world.

I was listening to a bunch of cast albums today as=I was stuck home all day...
Chicago OBCR--i know it was remastered in 1996 so it probably can't sound anybetter but it's really not a great recording considering it was 1975 or so--echoey and with weird dynamics--the recording level soudns high too with all the background hum. It's a GREAT performance so it's too bad, it's my fave of tyhe Chicago cast albums even with all the edits--I know Phil Ramone produced it and his older cast albums IMHo tend to be too echoey (much more than the classic COlumbia ones)--Little Shop in th early 80s is another offender that I wish coudl sound better but it probably can't...
And... Baker's Wife OCR. I know it was recorded on the cheap and we should be thankful it was recorded at all but MAN that sound--in Meadowlark there are bits where it sounds like Patti is in two different rooms where it switches back and forth. In another thread someone sniped at me fdor sayign I wish it could be remastereed--that i should be thankful for any recording and I am, and I love it but I just suspect there must be SOME way it could sound better.
E
Yes, Meadowlark is terrific. My other personal favorite in The Baker's Wife is 'Where is the warmth?'. Such a moving little gem.
As for Cabaret, I am currently totally into the 1998 Broadway revival recording. Alan Cumming is so awsome, his rendition of "I don't care much' is worth the price of the entire disk.

I love Warmth as well as Kurt's numbers (proud lady in particular--it seems so neutered in its new, less over the top lyrics in the new recording) But I meant the actual recording quality :P

Since I know little about various ALW recoridngs being only a casual fan one more question--was the Canadian Phantom CD ever remastered? That's the only one I can listen to for sentimental reasons...
E
No, this one wasn't remastered, but it doesn't have to be, since the sound is good. I love Rebecca Caine on that recording, but Colm Wilkinson did not do for me as The Phantom.

As a kid I prefered him ot Crawford (who I just find too whiny) and liked him but Colm's vocal stylings haven't grown on me (I can tolerate him in Les Mis largely because he just seems, musically to BE Jean Valjean so much to me).
You're right the sound is still pretty decent--it's a 1990 recording so not old although the recording voilume is a bit low and erratic like many ALWs.

Wasn't La Cage the first OBC to be recorded digitally?
What about shows that should be reMIXED as well as remastered? Assuming the master session tapes exist.
Actually I just read that La Cage was the first original cast recording to be released in the CD format.

Yeah early CD conversions of shows were pretty rough (which is why Pacific Overtures, converted to CD in 1984 could do with the polish given the other Sondheims...)
As for remixed--has this been done? I never owned an earlier version of A Chours Line's OBCR than the late 90s remaster (with the longer Montage) but I do remember reading that it was remixed slightly--the original mix, at the insistance of Bennett was exceptionally echoey or something to try ot osund more live (In fact maybe he had the piece remixed to sound that way after it was recorded and the current CD just goes back to the original recording? Anyone know the details?)

Sunday in the Park with George was.
