Don't put yourself through that, it's not worth it.

No, I haven't seen it, but I've heard stories. I do love the musical, though, and from what I've read, they are so different that it probably wouldn't make any difference, except that maybe you'll be able to appreciate just how awful the source material was, and how truly great the musical is for rising above it so well.

you don't have too... but I know seeing the movie helps only in that it makes fun of it.

You should be fine though.

well IF you do watch the movie just remember that it was BAD. But some think (like myself) in a good way... It's very campy but the music is so fun that it makes up for the horrible acting and storyline. Just pay close attention to the way ONJ sings and you should be good.

Bad movie? Well, it's not great, but it's campy fun and some of the musical sequences are quite fun to watch for both the right and the wrong reasons. Seeing the movie definitely clarifies some of the inside jokes in the show which seem to come out of nowhere if you don't understand the reference. Take from someone who has seen the movie, not just "heard the stories". I do say that in the theatre, when I was 10, it was FABULOUS.

Not seeing the movie won't hamper you enjoyment of the musical, but seeing the movie first will help.

Agreed, I watched the movie on a whim last summer because I knew they were making it a musical and I definitely was not blown away. But I love the Broadway show and seeing the movie did make me appreciate the greatness of the musical more... and there were some jokes I thought were funny because I'd seen the movie that my friends didn't quite get.

I've seen the show 5 times now and still have yet to see the movie. So it's definitely not necessary, but I am curious to watch this trainwreck of a movie!

Enjoy the show!!

The movie is so bad and so cheesy, it's great. That scene when Kira roller-skates into Sonny in the park, kisses him, and roller-skates away at lightning speed..that's just CGI at its best.

but like everyone says..it's not necessary.

I had my friend watch the movie before we went to see the show and she was very glad that she had. I'd recommend it for reasons already stated. You don't HAVE to of course but I would if I were you.

Watch the movie afterwards.

You are going to have so much fun. I just listened to the recording twice on my ipod before I had to make myself listen to something else.

The movie is very bad, but definitely worth seeing. I think that it did increase our enjoyment of the stage musical. I suggest watching it, but it isn't necessary.

I think I read in an interview with Cheyenne that copies of the movie were distributed to the cast of the musical in the early days of rehearsal; however, he also said he couldn't get through it b/c it was so bad. Take it from there. It's a GREAT FUN SHOW!!!!!!!!! YOU'll HAVE A BALL!!!!!!!!!!!! I've seen it 8 times, going for #9 this Saturday.

You have to love camp and ONJ to watch the movie. I saw it in the theaters, but I was a big ONJ fan and I liked Michael Beck after watching his other campy movie, "The Warriors." Gene Kelly is great, and the music from ELO is wonderful. I also saw Xanadu on Broadway and they did a wonderful job with it- pure fun!!! Much better than the movie, but it is true that you will miss a lot of references and inside jokes made about the movie during the show. So, if you watch the movie, don't have high expectations and just enjoy yourself....

It's also good to watch "Clash of the Titans" too... after you see the show, you'll understand why.
