Posted: 1/26/09 at 2:46amI thought that the house in Mary Poppins was amazing - definitely one of the more impressive sets I've seen. Another impressive set, I thought, was the High Fidelity set (if anyone remembers it :P).

The revival of Kiss Me, Kate had pretty impressive sets.
I loved the backstage alleyway.
And the fact that Michael Berresse could get from the bottom to the top of that thing without using the stairs amazed me.

For special effects, of course, Wicked (then again, I never saw Beauty and the Beast, which I know had some really nice ones, or any other show that had any number of special effects). Wicked definitely had quite a few of them.
For lighting, I say A Tale of Two Cities. I really liked the lighting in this show, and the way it affected the atmosphere throughout the performances.

The best lighting I have ever seen on Broadway was SPRING AWAKENING. Just how it blended with the music and matched the mood and everything about it... amazing.
And BatB easily had the best special effects I have ever seen. The Beast's transformation was just incredible. I saw it when I was little and was blown away and saw it again when I was older and was equally blown away. Gotta love Disney.

Posted: 1/26/09 at 12:28pmIt isn't on Broadway yet, but 9 to 5 has the best sets I've ever seen on a Broadway stage. Just the way they get them in and out so quietly is a marvel.

I thought the Drowsy Chaperone had such a beautifully detailed set. I was in awe of it. I just wanted to stare at it for an hour and a half - although the show was awesome as well.
I really enjoyed the set for "The Seagull." I mean, it was sparse, but everything about it was so beautiful. Just the whole production as a whole.
And probably my favorite - and i'm biased - was the latest "Sunday..." revival. Just beautiful. When the first little cartoon image flickered across the screen, I got so happy. I wish I could see it again.

Posted: 2/3/09 at 4:52amI've always loved Hairspray, as we all know, so I have to put in a mention for Hairspray Las Vegas.. Let's call it Hairspray on steroids. Wow! The giant geometric light boxes covering the front part of the theater, the additions to the basic scenes to blow it up larger and, my favorite, the entire Lite Brite wall splitting down the center during the finale as the Eventorium disappears in all directions and the 12 member band rides down stage, decked out in blue blazers and sitting behind music stands shaped like the Tracy hair, on a giant pod-platform with a giant Ultra Clutch can and stair cases down to stage level....
