Sherie Rene Scott for the Bway run of GREY GARDENS?

Posted: 5/26/06 at 7:07pmRead on ATC that there's a rumor going around that she'll be taking over the role of Little Edie (First Act) from former DRS co-star Sara Gettelfinger for the Broadway run of GREY GARDENS. Personally, I think she's far too old for the part, but it's an interesting choice nontheless. Discuss.

Why did you write former Dirty Rotten Scoundrels co-star?
When Sherie comes back in a few weeks won't they still be co-stars?

Posted: 5/26/06 at 7:31pmI don't really understand why there is all this talk of Sara G leaving? As far as I heard she was excellent in the role. If they did have to recast this wouldn't it be great if Jennifer Laura Thompson came back? She, I believe was the one in the early workshops of the show. But sherie rene scott is great and it would be interesting.

Posted: 5/26/06 at 7:44pmJennifer Laura Thompson does not want to do any long runs on Broadway until her son is older. This is why she did the Encores run of Of Thee I Sing, because it only had a weekend of performances to commit to.

First of all Sara was perfect and there is no reason to think she wont come back.
Second, Sherie and Sara are cast members and Sherie has too much class to stab a friend in the back like that.
Third, Sherie is too old for the role. This is a girl around 20, Sherie just wouldnt fit the bill.

No one would be stabbing anyone in the back. She's just taking a job offer. It's not like Sherie wanted the part and insisted on throwing Sara out of the show or something. It just happened like that...
And I heard Sara was being asked to leave the show for the Broadway run althought I can't recall why.

It's so funny when people suggest Bea Arthur and Carol Channing and Elaine Stritch for young people roles. It's SO hilarious! I never expect it!

Posted: 5/27/06 at 12:42amI think the reason they didn't ask Sara back was becaus she didn't resemble C.E. very closely. Like, the mother/daughter relationship just didn't show.

I personally felt Gettelfinger was somewhat miscast and totally failed to captured the odd, eccentric, quirky, petulant self-possessed nature of Little Edie in Act I, which Ebersole so completetly brings to life in Act II. She also didn't seem to have much of sense of humor or the self-deprecating nature, that again Ebersole later flawlessly embodies. It's almost impossible to believe that the two are supposed to be the same person. Gettelfinger is certainly talented, but seemed to be clueless as to what she supposed to be playing and apparently didn't understand that she was supposed to provide the beginnings of the arc of a character which Ebersole completes in the second act. She doesn't even attempt any of the mannerisms or vocal inflections or at the very least that pretentious Hamptons accent of the character which most certainly would have already been very much in place by the time Little Edie was in her 20s. As it is, Ebersole had to create Little Edie from scratch in Act II, because the audience has been given no hint or foreshadowing of who the character is or supposed to be watching Gettelfinger's performance in Act I. I, for one, am very happy the role is being recast.

And by the way, Rentboy, the show DIDN'T get raves off-Broadway. Ebersole's performance was hailed as one the finest ever in tne history of musical theatre (which is why it's moving), but the notices for the show itself were almost universally mixed. The first act especially came under attack as being quite overlong and even unnecessary, with a few critics even suggesting that it be tossed out entirely. And many of Gettelfinger's notices were mixed-to-negative.
It soldout the very small space at Playwrights Horizons due entirely to Ebersole's reviews and from the legions of fans of the original documentary that the show is based on -- not because of the reviews for the show itself which has A LOT of room for improvement (in the casting, the book and structure most notably).

actually, wanna be a foster..... just because a cast recording was made, does NOT mean the full cast is transferring.
I do not have any information one way or the other, and I am a HUGE Gettelfinger fan, but it is immediately suspicios tome that the only two cast members confirmed to make the transfer thus far are Wilson and Ebersole. I would imagine that there is some recasting of many roles going on, as the poster from ATC also mentioned they fired the OB casting director as well.

And didn't they mention that they will be making some changes to improve the show before it hits Broadway? So the cast recording wouldn't even reflect those further changes.

Posted: 5/27/06 at 11:13amWouldn't the director be to blame for the inconsistencies between Sara's Edie and Christine's Edie? The character wasn't written at all eccentric in the first act.

Posted: 5/27/06 at 2:41pmHaven't heard anything about Sherie Rene Scott taking the part in Grey Gardens, but I do know for a fact that they will not be offering the role to Ms. Gettelfinger for the B'way transfer. And I agree. I saw it and think she was miscast. Also, I hear that they are not sure about using Matt Cavanaugh. I know they are looking to see who else is out there. Smart move in my opinion. Wasn't strong in that role. I like he and Sara both normally, but not in that show.
