Hey, just because someone has a Tony does not mean she is the best out of the best... I don't think I'm being a bitch, I'm just stating an opinion.

Where in that message did i say she's the best of the best? Having a Tony does show proof of talent though... and how was dusting off yours?

I saw Shoshana as Elpheba in the very first Broadway show I ever saw! She was AMAZING! After the show we went to dinner and, being the friendly people we are, ended up talkin to about 4 of the waiters about the show. It seems that many people who reside in NYC have fallen in love with Shoshana. I am a huge Idina fan and I agree you can't compare the two, but Shoshana is extremely talented. She definatly deserves her props for that! I would love to see anyone of the shoshana and wicked haters to be hoisted up that high and belt out all those notes so we can then compare and hate on you! Needless to say these people are on Broadway for a reason and to dislike someone is fine but to wish and hope a person leaves or a show closes is AWEFUL! If that is the case I hope YOU get fired from your job soon and then I will show up at YOUR work and sing and dance as you pack up ur desk and retire to the unemployment line!
AHHHHHHH! NOT AGAIN!
By me saying that I don't like Idina does not mean I think I could do better. I never EVER said Idina was awful beyond reason, I just think Shoshana is better. If that's bitching off, then so be it. No doubt Tonys show talent, but the best don't always win. I'm all for Idina winning the Tony, Elphaba is a powerful role. I'm not refering to your post, but you have no idea how many people IM me saying "OH MY GOD! YOU DONT LIKE IDINA! WHY NOT! SHE'S LIKE A BROADWAY GOD! WHO DO YOU LIKE?! YOURE PROBABLY ONE OF THOSE OLD BITCHES WHO LIKES JULIE ANDREWS!"

go theatreboi... although you made my rant look moderately pleasent! I agree she is talented and as i said i was moderately impressed... if someone has the guts to get up there and do the show and is blatently in posession of talent... why slate them?
And sally i'm not attempting to fall out with you! If you don't like a performer that's your choice but the wording of your psot is arguably agressive. Elphaba is a strong role that instantly goes in her favour... but then again Eliza Doolittle didn't win the Tony and that's a strong role... and Julie Andrews is phenomonal! There are a lot more factors in it than the role! Also if Idian was as awful as certain people like to make out she was... she'd have never got the award!
"wait wait wait, hyprechet, since when do the voices of Broadway have to be "Broadway-ish". I don't think it's that they don't sound like classic Broadway actresses, everyone here is pretty good on accepting unique voices. Something tells me it's just the whole show itself, or their belting days, and the hype, not because they don't have "Broadway" voices. Because really, what is a Broadway voice?"
Actually, I was trying to DEFEND the show if you read my post. What I meant by Idina and Shoshana not being typical Broadway singers is that, people knock them for "screaming" and not singing. I think they're both great. I am OPEN to unique voices, like you said. I was just defending them, since other people don't like the that much. I honestly don't know what a Bway voice is. But people say that Idina is not an example of one.
I've seen Idina once and Shoshana twice and I prefer Shoshana. Shoshana is so much more consistent with her performances and even when she's sick she still sounds amazing! I love all the riffs she adds which just spice up the song and make Wicked a new experience every time I see it. Idina was good, but I saw her at the end of her run and there is no comparison. Idina was clearly tired and sick and just could barely sing the role.
Hyperchet-
I apologize, I misunderstood your post.

admanrich- I love your pic
"Okay kids. Wicked isn't bad, but it isn't the high art you all hold it up to be. Any Wicked thread like this is open to scrutiny."
Wow. Since when is a 34 year old woman who's been attending Broadway shows for over 10 years called a "kid"? I love Wicked and just because the cool thing to do is trash the show doesn't mean you have the right to talk down to its admirers.
Shoshana Bean is a mediocre singer who performs vocal tricks to make you think she can actually sing.
Well then she tricks me pretty well.

that doesn't sound too difficult!
No i'm only joking but how good would that response be if i was serious!

"Vocal tricks," as in singing the notes perfectly in tune, all the time, with clear diction (even though her vowles can be annoying), not to mention the fact that she has to belt in more than 3 octaves every night?
I'm curious as to what you mean. Please clarify, because it really doesn't make any sense.
Maybe you'd like to post some sound clips of yourself performing vocal tricks, so that we can all understand.

thats all i wanted to know
=)
This is informational only; I am not arguing with anything or anyone, just trying to explain. The Idina, Shoshana, Eden et al group have what are now known as "American Idol" voices: they belt, add flourishes, use vocal tricks, etc., and so their own voices and performances become more important than the song as it is written. They do not so much serve the score as the score becomes a vehicle for their particular perfomances. Merman was a belter, but always clean, and in service to the music (listen to "Gypsy" if you don't believe me).
None of them could really do Sondheim, for example: just think of the Aretha disaster at the Tony's. In a sense, Sondheim requires more discipline that these singers can provide. (Think about Collins on "Follies"--"Too Many Mornings" and "Losing My Mind"--no flourishes, no trills, no belt--just perfect pitch utterly devestating emotional honesty).
YOu know, all those American Idol riffs and riffs she throws in. She does it on the Hair cd too. Idina, has been known to do it often as well. Putting all these pop sounds into the song. Eden does it to.
Like it if you must, but Bean is limited and not as good as most make her out to be.
And I did see her, and she was off-key for most of the performance.
Okay, true dat gymman.
Come to think of it Beergoggles, it actually really isn't hard to trick me. This one time my friend told me the big rock under her porch was a grave site for a coyote. I beleived him. I was 12. I beleived him when I was 12.

if they add the trills they can also take them away!

Oh wow.. This is kinda scary. Whoever started this just wanted to know what Shoshana`s last performance was, not if Idina is better than. Sheesh, people. We all have our opinions of both women,so let them be. But a lot of these people have a point. Shoshana has been going at this for quite a while now and is very consistant. You could tell when Idina was getting tired of the show. That`s just my opinion.
I can't believe you love "Seesaw"--we must be the only ones!
Okay, about this whole riff thing. When you think about it, those are some pretty damn high belts, every single night... twice on Wed. Maybe it saves the voice a little if you add in riffs?
You guys make it too easy. If you start a Shoshana thread, it's gonna get knocked down. She sucks guys. Really. There are things I loved when I was 14 that I'll never listen to again. She's a fad, and maybe some of us just want to open your eyes to some of musical theatre's true talents.
PS Seesaw forever! Go Michele Lee!

I would hate to hear Idina, Eden, Syacon, Shoshana, and whoever else sing any "classical" Broadway scores, but Wicked is pop rock. They're supposed to have "American Idol" voices. They do it well. I'd hate to hear Ethel Merman, Charlotte Church, or Renee Flemming sing those songs.
It's not enough to dislike Shoshana, you have to dislike the enitre genre, which I'm assuming you do. It's not fair to make it all about the singer.

Is anyone else hoping that Ana Gasteyer comes to NYC?
