Okay, BobbyBuddy has a point there. It will get shot down, no matter what.

That's for the Shoshana Bean fans here. You can talk about her forever there!

Charlotte Church... so you haven't heard her recent pop/rock single release? I'm serious... i'll leave it to you to make your own oppinion.

I actually haven't heard anything from Charlotte in years. I just kinda assumed she took the money and went away. I'll look for the new single, though.
Of course Merman would sound weird in Wicked, the part is completely wrong for her.
I saw Wicked on a night where Idina just sang the show, straight through, no real riffs, no flashy tricks. Just freaking sang it note for note, and it was perfect.

Bobbybuddy, that is your opinion that Shoshana sucks, but if you were a woman, would you be able to belt like that? And if she sucks, how is she able to "sing" then? From actually seeing the performance and somehow having downloads of her January 8th performance, I would have never guessed that she was any good? *very sarcastic.
I would hardly call what Shoshana Bean does "belting".

Pushing, stretching the voice where it doesn't want to go. Belting is less forced, at least by real legit belters.

Bobbybubby- Where did you get your voice training and vocal performance degree from? Oh and isn't your book, "This is How You Belt: Broadway Edition" coming out next month?
NO but my book "How To Provoke Teenagers with Ease" is available right now.

haha I will admit that was funny, but keep in mind there is a huge population out there that loves Wicked and isn't a teenager anymore
lol
you are so right about belting...Merman "belts" as does Peters on occasion...

I believe the date is sometime in January of 2006.
It's already been said as January 8th.
i disagree with the comment that shoshana's voice is only for "wicked pop rock" and not the "broadway-ish" sound (whatever you define that to be). If you have ever been lucky enough to watch her perform her one-woman show, she sings a HUGE and i mean HUGE assortment of songs that showcase how versatile her voice really is. She can sing high operatic tones with ease, then quickly change to deep rich tones, and then switch to what you might call "pop-ish" sounding. She can belt and sing soprano with natural control and ease, and though is admittedly still young with not as much broadway experience under her belt as the other stars with "broadway-ish" type voices (still want to know how you would define that), she has the power behind her voice to sing circles around some of them...
"Bean has an unbelievable voice that is thrilling in its beauty, theatricality and sheer power. In fact–and as crazy as this will sound to those who haven’t heard her–she can sing circles around her idols with one of the most category-defying, voices I’ve ever heard" - David Hurst
if you haven't heard her, don't knock her. and if you have and don't care for her voice, thats fine, congrats to you for forming an informed opinion. You do not however, need to bash those who like her voice and imply that they do not appreciate true talent and that what they do happen to enjoy is just a fad. (And i said BASH-- not "do not voice your opinion" -- but do not knock down, insult, and say things you cannot back with fact.) A fad it may be... but it is not your place to put people down for liking what they like.
...can't come soon enough.
Wait. This wasn't one of those finsh-the-sentence-things?
Oops.
Come quickly Ms. Block!
yay I got an apology!

Why the hell are we talking about this again???? This is the... I don't know how many times this has been debated. Some people love Shoshana and some people love Idina. Hell, some people love Eden.
BTW, just offering my opinion. I don't think there is a "broadway" type voice anymore. There are too many voices out there to type them.

Well let's see when i was in NYC last what did i see
Gypsy- Bernadette, classic Broadway legend!
LSOH- Kerry Butler- Pop type of sound
Phantom- Light Opera from that young lady
Cabaret- Big Belting
yeah, i agree that there were truely different sounds!
oh my lord, ourtime, that is hilarious! "Ding Dong the witch is dead". I would pee in my pants if you did that.
Little Wing- amen! her one-woman show was amazing!
There are many current performers who have "Broadway" voices.

Technically, everyone in a Broadway show has a "Broadway voice."
I mean, timeless voices that defy a trend.
